F80 OEM M Performance "Carbon-Look" Side Skirts

I couldn't justify spending $500 for carbon fiber side skirts and wanted to stay OEM. I decided to get F82 side skirts, modify them, and apply carbon fiber vinyl.

I was quite pleased with the result. It was my first time using vinyl wrap. It took me almost an hour for the first piece, taking my time avoiding air bubbles. It took me only 20 minutes on the second one.

Yes, very curious, where did you get these rockers from?

Is it these ones, https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2...skirts-f82-m4/

Yes, I used F82 (M4) side skirts and got them from BMWPartsPro.com (forum sponsor) at fairly competitive pricing.

You will need to do a simple modification to fit them on an F80. I used the following as a guide.
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1334465
One improvement that I made was to cut the rear 1" notch all the way to the rear end of the skirts. This yields better fitment to F80 stock skirt.

Good to know. So am I interpreting correctly in that you made a 1” deep cut that is 19.5” long, starting at the very end of the skirt? This has no impact on the mounting points? TIA

Actually I lied. I made two changes from the instructions on the other post. Neither have any impact on mounting points, actually helped with getting the skirts sit flatter on the stock rocker panels.

Change 1: yes I cut the 1" slot all the way to the rear end. See the yellow line on the pic below.
I'm using the pics from the other post, hopefully, the owner won't mind.

Change 2: I grinded off a little notch at the front end of the skirt, see yellow circle on the pic below.

Dremel is your best tool for all these cuts. Took me 15 min tops including measuring and taping.

Looks great! How big of a roll of vinyl did you need. Something like a 2x12 ft roll?

The side skirt is about 80" long.
I believe all this vinyl comes on 5' rolls. Most sellers sell different widths, but same 5' length.
I bought a 84"x5' cut and only used small portion of it.

Planning on wrapping front lip as well now

Very nice job!! So I have the carbon fiber package on my M4. Do the OEM skirts you have match up better with these platforms than the after market skirts? I would like to purchase a set and like you, want the best figment/look and bang for the buck. Btw, what's the material cost, if you don't mind sharing? Thanks for any feedback.

I can't comment on the pattern matching with OEM M Performance parts since I don't have any.

I received a couple PMs inquiring about the vinyl I used.

I bought the roll from eBay. Please keep in mind that I'm not an expert on this and this was my first rodeo on wrapping. I went through a bunch of eBay posting and settled with auction number 281791346935. The vinyl came in a nice hard cardboard tube and shipment was quite fast. I can't comment on the long term quality of the vinyl. I figured if this lasts for a year or two, that's good enough and I can always re-wrap.

I got a plastic OEM M Performance front lip that I decided to wrap as well.

This work isn't for the faint of heart. I would rate wrapping the side skirt as a 3 on a scale of 0-10 and the front lip at 8.

I'm not entirely satisfied with the result. I may give it another try by splitting the top and bottom portion.

Looks great! Did you use self tapping screws to mount (and double-sided tape)? Also, were you able to use the pre-drilled holes being that they are F82 side skirts vs. F80?

Yes, I used self tapping screws (with washers) on the pre-drilled holes.

Hi, awesome looking rocket side skirts . Great job on the wrap!

It's a pity the original OEM m performance side skirts do not come in carbon fiber.

Great DIY work! How is the wrap now after months of driving ? Any stone/rock chips on the side skirts vinyl wrap?

Haven't been putting too many miles, probably around 2.5K-ish since I did the wrap.
The car is also garaged.

So far, there's nothing to report. The wrap still looks good and shows no signs of peeling or fading. I do hand wash the car every 2 weeks.

I sold the car about 1.5 years ago with about 20K miles on it. They still looked great then.
