Glad you got this sorted out.

Where is this "Star" I need to check mine, what am I looking for?

When I collected my car new it had a screw in the tread. They ordered a new tyre and they fitted it a few days later.

Not sure at which point but my car pulled to the left (new tyre fitted to the right front)

I took the car back at the first service and they corrected the tracking but I notice they put the previously replaced tyre on the right.

I'm wondering if something is wrong with the new tyre since I have never know a new car to have a tracking issue

It would be in an oval near the tire nomenclature on the sidewall.

Should look like the star you see on the PSS below to the right of "Pilot Super Sport"

I think it would be difficult to have the dealer fix the issue now unless you pointed it when you took possession. I think they would pull the how de we know you didn't swap it to get another tire.

I don't think any good dealer, especially one that you have a good relationship with, would pull that.

There are some pretty shabby dealers out there.

After one year with my new E46 M3, I had brought the car in for an oil change and the replacement of the rear tires. I picked the car up after business hours and when I got home, I noticed that one of the rear tires was cut and the rim was damaged. Seemed like someone back into a curb pinching the tire and damaging the rim. I sure know I did not touch any curbs on the way back from the dealer, but I still figured the dealer would say it happened after I took delivery of the car. I took my chances anyhow and showed it to the dealer the next day. To my big surprise, the told me they knew about the damage and that it was there before I dropped the car off. They even showed me their "as-received" inspection form . I asked to see the service manager who repeated the same story. I then asked them to pull the service sheet and look what work I had done on the car. Once he read it, I asked how could the tire be cut when I brought it in when they are the ones who replaced the tires . I just got a dumbstruck look from the service manager . They never agreed to replace the wheel they damaged . Needless to say, this dealer no longer has my business .

I said "no good dealer" not "no dealer".

My point is that not all dealers are good.

I know what your point is. My statement was "I don't think any good dealer, especially one that you have a good relationship with, would pull that." That definitely implies that there are dealers that aren't good. Why is my comment even an issue?

It's not. Your comment is perfectly appropriate and my reply was in no way intended to contradict it, but rather to complement it.

I heard a rumor that the BMW spec was less durable, explaining why it was wearing so fast at the track. I have for years interchanged the different specs on Porsches (always seemed like a money grab to me) and for street driving, you cannot tell a difference (I usually use Hoosiers on track anyway).

That being said, I replaced my fronts with the Mercedes spec fronts and I could actually feel the extra couple of pounds in terms of impact harshness on bumps. Not a big deal but worth mentioning. Haven't tracked the car on them yet so no comment on track durability. Street grip and other characteristics are very much the same.

All set, they claimed it was done as dealership goodwill. What was odd was it wasn't as if at one time it had the correct tire and was changed, there was no old wheel weight residue on the wheel, no one anywhere seems to know what happened. Anyway all good!

This thread got me worried so I went back to my car and checked all 4 tires, they are all MPSS with stars

You guys have to realize the guy in the parts department just clicks through a bunch of drop down menus in their tire software / distributors website, relies on it to tell him what tire they need , and then clicks order . LOL. I had a dealer quote me non run-flatts once on accident because they switch distributors and their software wasn't updated to 2017 models. Of course I knew when I was shocked how cheap 4 tires were, that something was wrong.

Learned a lot about tires on this thread! Thanks for the update.

The big question is how did it get there in the first place? Everyone just shrugs!

It's a bit more complex than this. Tires are specifically developed and designed to a car manufacturers specification for a given vehicle application. The tires contact patch shape and size, tread pattern, carcass rigidity, wheel width fitment, front-or-rear application or even tread compound are optimized for a given vehicle. Hence the many different specs for a given tire size. For example, there are no less than 5 different specs for the 265/35R19 PSS:
  • N0: Porsche Carrera GT front tire
  • * : BMW M2 rear tire
  • M0: AMG GT-S front tire
  • M01:AMG C63 rear tire
  • TPC:CTS-V front tire

Every tire dealer should be able to get you a tire to the righ specification, not only a BMW dealer or TireRack.

I have looked at the BMW Star, MO etc. listed next to certain tires on Tire Rack and was wondering why that was. I had no idea there was this much discrepancy. Almost 3/4" tread width difference in width between Porsche and Mercedes tire of the exact same "numerical" size? And up to 2 lbs difference depending on manufacturer? That's insane.

Thank you for sharing. I learned a lot.
