Speeding ticket
Of course, having an M these are common however today's was just ridiculous!
Some asshole not letting me pass resulted in this (also my fault). I switched 2 lanes to pass this idiot and out of slight rage I let my foot loose. The instant that I accelerated, I see the state trooper being that my car is roughly 500whp an 'instant' is all it takes to go well above the speed limit. I new I fucked up, I would have seen him if I didn't have this large SUV in front of me not allow me to pass earlier. I also would not have had to go WOT. I was going 78 in a 55. I could not have been more respectful to the cop & he could not have been more respectful to me. Interestingly enough didn't even ask why I was going so fast or anything. Now I'm assigned a court day for this bullsht. |

Or you could have slowed down and waited and not over reacted to someone not as in as much of a hurry as you. Problems happen when people behind the wheel can't control their emotions. Lesson learnt I hope.

On your court date before you speak to the judge, you will more than likely speak to the prosecutor. I would plead with the prosecutor for no points but a higher fine. If you have a clean record, it should help you. Good luck

This has been my first speeding ticket. Any reasoning as to why I didn't receive a fine, but instead was assigned a court date?
It'd be really nice if he ends up not showing up that day |

In California, a speeding ticket counts for a 1 point deduction, which you can negate by completing traffic school. However, drivers are only eligible for traffic school once every 18 months. It looks like a similar system is in place in NYC: https://dmv.ny.gov/tickets/about-nys...r-point-system Best of luck with the case, and hire a traffic lawyer if you really need to. |

Where I am from when I receive a speeding ticket I go to court to dispute the charges and just beg for mercy from the police officer who reduces the fine. Same court hearing some girl did the same and told him about all the hardships of her life (school debt, single mother etc,) and he just dropped the ticket all together.

85mph vs. 78mph is just a split second away if you are WOT in a 500whp car, so I'm going to GUESS the LEO didn't write up your actual speed to cut you a break since you were being respectful. Personally, I would lawyer up and I agree with the others that you should try to plead for no points and higher fine |

You can postpone the court date. Usually they assign a court date rather than give you a fine on the ticket because you're innocent till proven guilty. You may get something in the mail showing what your bail amount is, which you can choose to pay if you plead guilty or go to court. This is based on California law but may differ in NY.

I would definitely fight the ticket cause owning these cars its tough not to get a ticket every time you get into them.
Fight it in hopes that he wont show up and if he does just take traffic school but there is always a good chance they don't show depending on the city, county, and how busy they are. You can also lawyer up but if this is your first ticket in last 18 months just fight it and hope he doesn't show and if he does take traffic school. Good luck.. |

Talk to people you know in your area to see if you can find out how people have lightened or eliminated points impact from tickets. States differ a lot so what works for some of us won't necessarily help you. (Try off topic and regional forums too.)
I got a ticket under similar circumstances to your's in a previous car. I was going faster than you were, but in a 65 mph zone. Sucks but gotta be careful around slow pokes.

You can get rid of points if it's your first ticket with traffic school, but traffic school is expensive and will be in addition to the cost of the ticket.

You're in NY. Get a lawyer. Also postpone if you can.
If you can, sign the POA so that the lawyer can go on your behalf. Might cost you some dough, but it will be cheaper then your insurance and points and all that. Ideally the lawyer can plea it down to some large fine and no points. Also, buy a V1.

NY has the 6 hour defensive driving course that eliminates 4 points. You can take it every 3 years.

All I did was postpone it. Then I showed up to court on the postponed date. I think the cops usually schedule several tickets for the same day to get it done all at once, so he wasn't going to come in just for one ticket and have to take off from his shift for half the day when he could be writing more tickets to meet his quota for the day. I think I postponed the arraignment as well as the trial so it was almost a year or so after the ticket that I had my trial date. There might be a faster approach but I don't mind keeping the case tied up in the courts if it helps get the case dismissed.

Not worth taking a crap shoot on whether the cop will show up or not, even if you did reschedule it. If you can afford an M3, just lawyer up. Well worth the money.
