THIS. Exactly what I was thinking.

They did the same with the previous E60 M5 V10, chopped two cylinders off, tuned it, and put it in the E92 M3. I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same from the current F10 M5 (V8TT) to the future F80 M3 (V6 TT).

also I hope the next m has better or similar performance to the new m5!

Given that the S65 was lighter than the S54, and likely lighter than the N54/N55, this is flawed logic. But go ahead keep your hopes up, I'd like to see one last n/a M motor too.
N54 was 195 kg vs 202 kg for s65...

I hope I hear some 2012 M3s get released. Everyone's been waiting forever and I'm scheduled to fly down to LA to pickup my car next weekend which is only a few days after the ship gets to the VPC.

Anyone want to make a serious cash bet with me on turbo vs n/a. I'll bet anything it's turbo given that every new model is pretty much turbo....

Any takers?

I am sure it is the m3 but just a note that there has NEVER been an m test mule, atleast dating back to the e39 M5 and all m's since that did not have quad exhaust.

Take of that what you will. I think this is a 335is personally and not an m3

I did not read the whole thread, but read some statements.
!!
I bought the new sport cars magaine, and there is a "M special" in it, with an interview with
Dr. F. Nitschke.

I can scan the pages about the "M special" in, and post it in m3post...
but the statements I want to share:

-NO V6! He says that if the new M3 gets an six cylinder engine, it will be an inline!!!!
-There will be nor X3M and X1M in the near future

so if you want me to put this up, I do this right after work!

Sad news to see this early M3-mule testing again ... think it´s the only one with the "cheap" R6 under the hood ... the other M3-prototyps with the complete M Bodykit under the camo have all the new and innovative V6!

The Q5 S is, to the best of my knowledge, going to get the superchared V6 from the S4 and S5 cab. That's really just Audi's answer to the X3 35i, like the S4/S5 are to the 335i. They'll need an Q5 RS - something with 400hp or more - to properly go up against an X3 M.

SCOTT might be able to shed some light on that, if he is so inclined.

No one else really knows what the change in chassis code signifies yet...

The reason for the special chassis code for the M3/M4 is to show that the M3 is not the top model of the 3er series ... the M3 is an sportscar only in an 3er outfit and no 3er.

I strongly doubt that the reason is purely symbolic since they don't use chassis codes as a marketing tool to begin with.

Also, let me restate it another way for emphasis:

No one knows why the new M5 and M6 retain the chassis code from the series model while the new M3 and M4 are rumored not to. That is, no one knows what the significance of these two diverging naming schemes is yet.

The chassis code changes because of some significative differences compared to F30 not that we should expect full carbon fiber chassis.

Really Uli_HH? It is again a cheap I6 instead of an innovative V6? No.

That's not true. Early test mules of the 1M did not have the quad exhaust, which can be seen here:

Do not rely on these interviews in automotive circles to tell you what is happening because it is pure diversion. Although you think you are getting the hard facts. It is not the time to announce anything substantial.

But some drop little hints or branches to let you know something is afoot.

Interview with Ian Robertson for UK Broadsheet.

There have been rumors that the new Coupe and Cabrio will be carrying a 4-series badge. What does this mean for the M3?
"The M3 is enormously important to us" I cannot confirm the rumours, but whatever the badges on the bootlid, there will be an M3 Model.

Note- Whatever the badges. and There will be an M3 model instead of model(s).

That's reasonable, general conjecture, but again no one has any idea what that might entail.

A few observations.

1.) We have not seen any F32/33 mules testing.
2.) adding to the above point, it seems that the F80 M3 WILL have the F30 front (the sedan front)
3.) The F32/33 and the F82/83? will be labelled the 4-series and M4.
4.) the F80 launch MAY be before or around the time of the F32/33 launch.
