I said it before but this is one of the most peculiar rollouts of a new vehicle I've ever seen. Perhaps all part of the plan. This thing MUST be a game changer.

I don't think it sounded bad.. I like the e46 rasp and my 335i held its own with the golf tee mod and this sounds similar to the latter (solely from this video). The whole introduction was underwhelming, though. Still excited to drive the new m3.

I remember when I heard my first E46 M3...I was behind a phoenix yellow one and I knew it was a BMW M3 but I had no idea what engine it had, the specs etc etc. Was in my early 20's then. All I knew was that it was a fast car.
I heard it accelerate hard and I immediately thought it had a broken exhaust! Wanted to tell the owner at the traffic light that something was up with his exhaust but never did. Sometime later I realised all these 6cyl M3's sounded like this stock and I really didn't care for it. Just my opinion of course. Ended up owning 2 x N54 engine cars. Love the sound of the N54. Esp. the 335is and (Z4 35is) exhausts. Very decent for a 6cyl. The new M3 in the vid sounds alright actually. But not as good as the concept S65 M3. |

I also owned an N54, and I liked the exhaust and turbo sounds at the time. I didn't know what I was missing until I heard an M3 and then bought one. this new car won't sound close to the outgoing M. everyone knows that, and it bugs me that people still say it so frequently as if it's not pre-evident. the question is will it sound better than the N54 (which isn't the worst place to start), and I feel confident that it will. there will always be those that place the utmost importance on sound, and BMW understands that it has estranged those buyers with this new car. I'm not sure they mind so much, as I'd be willing to bet there are more people that would trade the sound in favor of the fuel efficiency (remember, this is a car for the masses and not for the forum-posting enthusiasts). just my 2 cents. personally, I'm psyched to drive the new M3. if it meets my expectations, I'll buy one. if I miss the sound and feel of the V8, I'll be in the market for a lightly used e90 (need the 4 doors now). either way, good times to be had. |

Personally I couldn't care less about media presentations. First it was 3 pages about people complaining how BMW brought an M3 with a sunroof (god forbid), now we are going to talk about entrances? What a joke. Wake me up when Chris Harris gets his hands on one.

I remember when the E92 M3 was introduced, the sound and looks sent chills down my spine.
I can't say the same about the new M3/M4. I'm sure it's an amazing machine, I'll keep an open mind and look forward to seeing them this weekend. |

That's the problem with focusing all the sound into the exhaust and then relying on active sound for the induction. From outside the car, if it isn't under load, that's what it sounds like. Terrible.

And this is exactly the issue a lot of us have. M3s used to be for a much more limited niche market oriented towards the enthousiasts. There was much less need for ///Marketing. People "who knew" would just go out an buy the cars. BMW are now going for a larger market share and more profit. If it were my business, I would certainly do the same so I cannot blame them.

I tried for all 4 mins and 38 secs of the above video to enjoy/like/get used to the sound of the M4 but I just can not get as excited about it as the E92. I realize the M4 has better curb weight, acceleration, handling, braking, fuel economy, and aesthetics than the E92 as its the next evolution; but it just doesn't evoke the same emotion as the E92. It just sounds so impotent as it rounds the track in the above video with "farts" at every down shift and a low hum under hard acceleration. Hardly something to be feared or revered. For someone like me its more about how the car makes me feel when I drive it than anything else. I'm the type of guy who will buy a car with a 6MT over DCT without a second thought; and happily row my own gears as I listen to the beautiful sound of the engine not even bothering to turn on the radio. I'll wait until I can test drive an M4 to make my final decision, but it might be a used E92 for me. |

so how is it LESS catered towards enthusiasts than the comparably fat and soft e92?
