You are good...0W-30 or 5W-30.
Don't sweat it.

If BMW is not recommending changing transmission fluid, why do it?

And if we want to do it ourselves is it better to wait until more miles on speedometer, like 15K or 30K?

Are they supposed to test drive ur car for 1200 m service? And if yes, how many miles did they put on ur car? They put 17 miles on my car. Is that normal?

I had only a few more miles, maybe 4.
Were they driving it around to check for rattles or the tin can noise from the back wheel?

They need to drive the car to warm up the engine for the oil change (if it's not warm already).

One mile usually. They took your car for a joy ride. :

What is the minimum mileage to have the break in service done? I should be taking delivery next week and already have my break in service scheduled for Dec 10. This is because im leaving for a road trip on the 11th which is 1200+ miles itself. So my plan is to drive as much as possible for the week I have but I fear i will only reach 700-800 miles. My SA said there is no minimum but you know how that goes.

You'll be fine at that kind of mileage. Enjoy!

I just had my first 2,000km (=1,200miles) service done.
They have changed:

Engine Oil - 5W30 (83 21 2 296 489)
Oil filter (11 42 7 854 445)
Transmission Oil - MTF LT-5 (83 22 2 156 969)
Rear differential oil (83 22 9 415 961)

However, they did NOT change the SCREWS for engine oil and diff oil (or at least it is NOT shown on the service report).
Is this a problem? (ie. should I go back and ask them to correct the situation)

They are Alu and are a one time use item. BMW AG says you should always replace them - as with any alu bolt,bc it stretches(once torqued) and can break.

BMW not recommending and BMW not paying for service are two different things.
In the US before prepaid maintenance programs became the norm, and in the rest of the world, BMW recommended replacing all oil after initial engine/tranny/diff break in. On all cars.

Once the prepaid maintenance took hold, the recommended oil change intervals got longer (from 5K to now 15+K), and the break-in oil changes went out the window. Except for the ///M cars.

But even for the ///M cars the DCT oil change may cost too much for BMW NA to swallow, so we get to pay for those out of pocket...

Usually, you want to swap oils after the initial break in, when most of the initial gear meshing and abrasion takes place. Then follow the old-school maintenance schedule.

That's around ~500 euros. You can get the money back thru BMA NA when you return to the USA. At least that's the way it worked with the e9x M cars.

According to the ED Program welcome packet I received last night,
"Among the exclusions from the "Maintenance Program" are repairs or maintenance performed by other than an Authorized BMW Center within the US or Puerto Rico. Therefore, while in Europe, any maintenance repairs or services are the customers responsibility."

I don't have any first hand experience with their service depts... but these two dealerships are fairly large and convenient - with U-bahn and S-Bahn connections. But my recommendations would be...

BMW Niederlassung München (main factory dealership, where all the Individual cars are on display!)
Frankfurter Ring 35
80807 München

BMW Niederlassung München Filiale Fröttmaning (next to the Alianz Arena)
Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 10
80939 München

BMW Niederlassung München Filiale Nord (next to the Welt and BMW cylinder building, small shop though)
Riesenfeldstraße 7
80809 München

IF you have the first service performed while on ED... you will need to pay for it. It runs about ~500 euros. Once back in the states, you can write BMW NA and see IF they will credit you the cost of the service. It use to be that BMW NA would refund your service costs while on ED. But I have heard it takes quite a few months(six ?).

Thanks Dackelone! I will be getting this done while out there. Would it be better to let someone at Welt try and arrange this service or should I start the email chain now (assuming I know the date I will want it done)?

You could start emailing now. I think as long as you can stay flexible on your "service date" you should be able to get this service done.

Remember ANY bmw dealer can do this service. I like going to a small dealership, bc I get a more personable experience. IF a dealer doesn't have the correct parts(oils) they can order it from bmw and the parts arrive at the dealership the next day. Often times, larger dealers get TWO deliveries per day.

The three dealers that I listed should have all the parts needed. But it never hurts to call/contact them ahead of time. IF I were you... I would buy new diff plugs in the states and carry them with you. Replacing these alu "screws" still seems to be a problem.

ALSO... IF you plan on touring any of BMW's other factories like Regensburg(M4, Z4, 1er, F30 and F32 are made) and or Leipzig(i3/i8 and F20's) any of these factories have service centers - which you can have service done. BUT you would need to schedule an appointment ahead of time. You could also probably do a factory tour while your car is being serviced. ?

Good Luck and have fun on your ED.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I have a similar concern. I was hoping I could do it around the 900-1000 mile point.

Where we can buy screws for engine oil pan/plug and differential? Because someone here mentioned that is better we buy those screws before going on 1200 mile service.

Also what transmission oil does it go in DCT version?

Thanks
