Splitting hairs perhaps but some of the pre-production models have steel cross-braces in the engine bay instead of CF. On the other hand, most don't seem to have any hood insulation. I'm impressed with these numbers so far. Here we have a slightly larger car that is slightly lighter. Whether it actually meets its beltline target as built and apples to apples with the outgoing model will have to wait. Meanwhile, I'm expecting that my M4 will end up being at least 10 lbs heavier with driver a few weeks after I take ED based on all the wiener schnitzel and beer, pasta and wine I plan on ingesting.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

Axis of Oversteer also recently had a E90 M3 on the same scale and it weighed in a 3736 lbs (fully optioned, DCT, full tank, no driver) - 174 lbs heavier than the F80 M3 (3562 lbs).

On the same scale, a E92 3 Series weighed in at 3585 lbs. (no sunroof, manual transmission).

Yikes, so about 3600 lbs w a DCT. Not that i care about weight that much but they did not do a good job saving weight here thats for sure. What does an equivalent 135i weight?

More like 3650lb. DCT vs 6MT is 89lb on the F8X.

That's actually really impressive, considering that the F8x got larger in almost every dimension as well as having a lot more safety features.

Yeah like I said, I dont concern myself w weight that much. To me, all vehicles in the 3400-3600 lb range feel near identical. To truly feel a weight difference you need to go below 3300. Below 3100, that gets way to rickety for me and I will not feel safe in the car at high speeds.

E90 DCT weighs about 46 lb more than the manual, sunroof weighs about 40. So still almost 100lb lighter. Not bad at all

Wait the 3,562 lbs is with a manual.

How many lbs does DCT add again?

I just wanted to say:

As we all know: BMW had made progress regarding weight reduction with the 6MT (which is now somewhat lighter than before) while on the DCT they became heavier (because it is the F10 M5 DCT which now is able to handle the increased torque).

Bottomline:
If the F8x doesn't impress with weight savings in a comparison F8x 6MT to E9x 6MT then it will definitely NOT impress in a comparison F8x DCT to E9x DCT.

And if you have a look at Jasons last update, you see almost NO weight reduction of the F80 6MT with Carbon roof to a E92 6MT Carbon roof.
And since (according to BMW specs) the F80 and the F82 only differ in 40-45lbs, that means that thats it - 40-50 lbs reduction in comparable NON DCT M4s ...

I was expecting sub 3500 lbs weight for a 6MT F82. Looks like it's not going to happen. Still lighter than the e9x. And as long as rotating mass was reduced I guess it's a nice advantage either way. Oh and 16 gallon fuel tank!? That's better than my e39

Yes but different scale. The cars talked about in Jason's post were weighed on same scale in the same place.

Not really, more like 84lb.

3736-45-45-3562=84

That is a far cry from the advertized 183lb weight reduction...

Now compare DCT to DCT and you are down to a 40lb weight saving.

3736-45-(3562+89)=40

I am eager to see more samples, this is dissapointing so far.

Ha! Under 3,300lbs my ass! Who did we think BMW was Porsche?! Lol! Still, the F80 M3 is 838lbs lighter than my F10 M5. Very much more track worthy.

Scales should not be that difficult to calibrate. It is also mentioned that a 6MT E92 M3 weighed 3585 on that same scale. Fuel load could explain the 45lb difference ( a full tank weighs about 100lb).

im pretty sure their weight reduction claims r for ceramic brake option, f82, 6mt. thst would be about 200 lbs saved vs an e90.

My previous statements on this forum have been confirmed. I said, when I see a STRIPPER M3/M4 weigh in the 3,3xx weight range with some type of fuel I'll be impressed.

My stripper e90 weighs in around 3500 lbs with light fuel so at the end of the day, props to BMW for bring a more complete and lighter package, but I knew in the REAL WORLD the e9x M3 guys concerned with weight (few options, test pipes, light wheels/exhaust) would have realistically no disadvantage (disadvantage being a <100 lbs weight difference)

Good shit for e9x M owners. Also good for the new Ms because at least weight was lowered, which really is great

So - if you look here (Test M3 E92 with DCT and full tank), you see, that M3 E92 DCT weighted 1640kg/3613lbs.

To do the F80 a favour here, I expect that it has been weighed WITH DCT also.
But then we talk about a difference of 22,7kg/50lbs!
Nothing to get overexcited, MHO?
there are differences between US and euro spec cars.

Finally someone who gets it.

The car is substantially bigger, and it's less weight.
