Remaps

Hi what is the going rate for a remap on the M4 these days? I think MoreBHP were quoting £849 whereas for my 330d it was £500...

Is this a decent rate?

Look into obd remap.
Many tuners are available.
And you can get various levels of tune and they are switchable.

Different ways of doing it, generic remap, custom remap, tuning box, custom mapped tuning box - the list goes on. And it depends on how much you care about your warranty (if you have any).

Friend of mine is the owner of TDI-Tuning, they have offices in both Chelmsford and Manchester. They get some very good results from their tuning boxes and will customise the tune for you depending on your needs/mods. Cost is around the £400 mark plus rolling road time. This will give you around the 500bhp mark and 600+nm Torque. Best bit, you can take it off very quickly and easily and there is no evidence of the car being tuned.

Give Steve or Graham a ring in the Chelmsford office and talk to them about options/requirements and they will communicate those to their people in the Manchester office (assuming you prefer to visit somewhere closer to home)

Plenty of choice out there including the OBD tuning, but whatever you do don't tune the car believing that BMW if they look hard enough won't be able to tell they can no matter what the device is.

+1

Don’t be mislead into believing tuning box’s can’t be detected when removed as they can if Bmw decide to dig into the Ecu and read stored data.

Lots of different views on what BMW can and can’t see, depending on how hard they look. Bottom line, you tune your car, you always risk your warranty. All I’m saying is that tuning boxes/piggy back tuning solutions don’t make changes to the ECU, making it harder for BMW to trace.

I think it's a pretty shitty business model that relies on telling people to defraud the manufacturer in order to sell products.

Imagine you ran a business where other people ran your products out of spec and then covered it up and tried to get you to fix the problems, you wouldn't like it would you.

No issue with tuning but all this "they can't tell" stuff is out of order.

Because never has a main line dealer used some BS excuse to avoid paying out on a warranty claim. Happens all the time and you read about it all over the web. I get what you are saying, but most people will have cause for complaint due to main line dealer attitudes and warranty is probably one of the more common complaints.

As I say I don’t disagree with what you are saying, hence the reason I stated you tune and you risk losing your warranty. But in my opinion there’s an element of “it works both ways”. Main line dealers are far from angels and 9 times out of 10 will screw even their most Loyal customers to make money.

Nope, it's the way internet forums work people discuss things and have opinions, a 10 second google will give you a price from all the major tuners in the UK.

Evolve will charge you £899 for an OBD flash they have a good rep as an example.

Yeah I get that Mav, but I think these days they (BMW) not the dealers are so hot on this stuff that getting away with it is not as easy as it was and it's the pushing of the "they can't tell" that irks me.

Nothing to say that a remap trashes the car far from it, the S55 is a strong engine by all accounts but I'd rather tuners played it straight (and many do)

I will probably tune mine once it's out of warranty but I'll have to underwrite those extra ponies myself.

Turning up the boost is always going to take more life out of an engine and some poor sap further done the ownership line is going to pay the price.
And anyone thinking of getting a tune to turn up the boost should absolutely be assured that exceeding a preset boost level is irrevocably recorded in the ECU.

I think that was covered in my earlier posts Peter, they can tell no matter what, it's whether they look hard enough which they will if the engine goes bang under warranty.

If you spend some time on the main section just like the F10 M5 the S55 is pretty robust they tune the hell out of them and not many issues reported.

But IMHO you have to be prepared to stand by the tuning and warranty yourself as it's bad form to rip BMW off.

The problem is that the majority of people who have raised the boost on cars like the (turbo) M3/4 is that they clear the tune or remove the tuning box when they come to sell on.
Then omit to mention to the next buyer that the car was tuned.
That's the underhanded lie/cheat.
Raising the BHP will always increase stress on the engine and on the entire drivetrain and it will likely show eventually.
Don't get me wrong I couldn't care less, but imagine if you bought an M4 that then lunched its engine but had a warranty engine replacement refused to due a previous owner running a tune that was logged on the ECU.

They can easy spot a tuning box being on any cars, logs are kept of boost pressures/fueling etc.
If your out of warantee all good if not it's a risk.
