Losing M Drive settings

Strange thing has happened twice with my car when starting.... my m drive settings get reset to blank so when pressing the m1 or m2 buttons, it just flashes ... I have to manually set again to fix... time and other settings are not impacted.. anyone else had this issue?

Are you using the other key fob? I believe those profiles are stored to the fob.

Yes, all personal setting is stored with the key fob. If you used the other key, all setting wont appear if you use the other key fob.

Are you holding the M1 and M2 buttons too long such that they overwrite stored settings to store whatever the settings are at the time as new settings?

Sounds like something to get checked at next service visit.

This happened to me the other day. had a few sensors go bad, lost power steering, DSC, bunch of safety nannies... Shut down car, turned it back on and all of the bad news went away... but when I tried pushing M1 or M2 it would just flash and wouldn't do anything.

Another shut down and restart fixed it, but I required new sensors and a software update.

I'd plug in a cable and see if you are throwing codes or just bring to a dealership for a quick diagnostic

FYI, the M button settings are not "stored" in the key fob. The M-button presets, as many other settings, are stored in a "user profile". When the unlock button is pressed, the user profile that was last used with that key fob is recalled.

It might seem trivial and only about semantics, but the above is quite important in understanding some behavior with recalling settings, user profiles and key fobs.

I have a hunch the OP has not "lost" his M-button settings, but rather something with the car (a fault or whatever) is preventing their activation when pressing the button.

OP, the next time this happens, before doing anything, go in the Settings menu in iDrive to see if your M-buttons are still programmed as you had them.

Thanks for the clarification.

You might have a bad HU-H or NBT EVO whichever of the two are in your car. Had a client with an M6 have same issue, I found the headunit defective after noticing he was having Bluetooth issues as well. This isn't a diagnosis as I'm not in front of the car but just some food for thought.

Yea.. I did check the settings to confirm after the flash and both m1 and m2 settings were set to blank for all options ... the first time this happened, it went away by itself ... I restarted the car a few times and while driving it came back....

Second time is when I decided to check the settings and noticed the blank ... after setting the m1/m2 settings back manually... it hasnt come back since .. so crossing fingers it won't come back

I have a 2017 M4 gts and just experienced that last night. I had been traveling and the car was not started for a while so I got an intense battery discharge. It was a bit late to take her out last night but I will share if the issue goes away after driving it for a while.

My 2016 M4 (now 1 year old) has never lost its settings. That is not normal, have it checked out. Something is up.

Turns out that after having the car run on idle for a while and starting it the next day everything went back to normal.
Hope it stays that way. I did install a Lithium battery tender just in case.
