Worth it to Certify (CPO)?

Is it worth it to certify a car for the extended warranty?

Depends, how long are you planning to keep it?

Do note that the extended warranty doesn't cover the same items as the standard warranty does.

+1. The extended warranty mostly covers the engine and drive tran.

I don't think it's worth it. I usually swap cars regularly, but warranties in general have a 50% markup, so I'd rather put the extra money in a savings account and find a trusted BMW shop. My 2c

like others have stated ext warranty def is a good idea if you plan on keeping it past the fact warranty.
if you want a hook up on the ext warranty shoot me a buzz. we discount them heavily for forum members

Thanks Golffrr and everyone for chiming in. Sounds like it's not recommended to get extended warranty or to get a car certified (CPO'ed).

I wouldn't say that at all. It's personal preference but by and large I would say most people feel more comfortable being under a warranty of some type. Aside from CPO there are other levels of warranty offered by BMW (something more simple like the powertrain + warranty may be more cost effective).

Is the M3 your only car? Do you have a trusted local shop to do repairs if needed?

I only have one car. And a popular independent shop here is cheaper than the dealers but still is pretty expensive.

I think it depends on the car and how long you want to keep it/drive it.

I bought my car used a few months ago, was not BMW CPO. I asked the GM to do it and he said that it wouldn't be worth it due to the year, mileage, etc. In any case, I opted to purchase an extended powertrain warranty for 24m/25k miles. It was cheaper than the CPO (which would have added about 6-7k to the overall cost) and it covers really all of the things I was worried about.

$6K - $7K for CPO is insane! Did that include doing a bunch of repairs that were necessary to meet CPO specs or something?

So then a BMW extended warranty, CPO or otherwise, may make sense. One thing about the BMW warranty which has great value is the ease of the process in terms of having work performed. You can simply bring your car to the dealership, receiver a loaner, and be on your way which has a lot of value imo. Instead of taking it to an indy shop (whose hours are probably not as good as the dealership's), arranging for a rental car, scrutinizing the repair quote and wondering if you are getting screwed, etc.

My car was already certified elite on the lot....why should you have to "ask" to have the car certified? That alone would make me nervous.

Its not that uncommon. If a car is fairly new with low mileage sometimes dealers will not certify as they may not be able to recoup the cost of doing so. Perhaps it would push the price point close enough to a new car that they would have trouble selling it. But if the car is otherwise eligible, most dealers would not have an issue certifying it for a buyer.

This. I bought my F82 9 months after it was turned in with only 5k miles on it because the owner didn't like it for daily driving and wanted something bigger. Once the dealer paid to certify it would have been damn close to sticker so they decided not to knowing it would move just fine without it. With the vast remainder of the factory warranty and knowing it was from an extremely reputable dealer I didn't care one way or the other if it was CPO.

This is just the ballpark he gave me. To be honest, the car really didn't NEED anything, he was just saying that in order for them to get their money out of certifying it (adding the extended warranty for the M, etc) it would end up putting the car out of its value. Meaning they would have to ask too much for it based on year/mileage, etc.

In any case, it didn't stop me from buying it and I have enjoyed the shit out of it since I've had it. My only regret is that I didn't wait and get one with a carbon roof but it is what it is. We are all lucky to have these cars.

I talked to many dealers that wouldn't certify the M cars they had on the lot.

One of them was a 2016 M3 with 3800 miles on it. It had the CCB package and every other option. I asked them to do it and they said no, car was only offered with a third party warranty service.

Well, that dealer was full of shit. If the car didn't need anything to meet CPO standards, the only real cost they'd have to certify is the warranty which is nowhere near that cost (and they would markup when selling). Good to see you didn't pay it - enjoy the car.

Probably not going to get any kind of extended warranty. CPO costs $1,600 (cheapest I found), other extended warranties cost $3,500-4,200.
