Yes I know this has been discussed. Yes I've done my HW.

I'd like to hear peoples first hand accounts w F80 on winter wheels and tires, what's worked best?

tons of threads on this already. Depends on your requirement. If you plan on snow driving but still want reasonable dry fun Dunlop Wintersports are great. If its a cold-dry tire you need, Mich PS/AS3-4. Want to say Nokian hakkapeliitta or blizzak for better snow perf, but worse dry perf, but I've never had them.

I am currently on the AS3+ for winter, but its just for cold/dry driving. Keeping the M3 salt free as much as I can help it. Ran wintersport 3ds on 2 other cars for ~8-10ish winters and they were really nice in snow, but still had decent dry traction.

I want the best traction in deep (as deep as a F80 can go) snow

Nokian Hakka R3 hands down, with X-Ice and then Alpin 5 as a next best options. You're going to want a square setup 245mm or 255mm, an 18inch tire with as much sidewall as possible, and a set of smaller squared wheels.

The biggest issue with ours cars is clearance above 6 inches of snow, even less if you're lowered. The next big thing is having enough room on the road to let the ass swing out, especially on turns. That said, the car's movements are very predictable in the snow in efficient mode

If you want something extreme weather capable but awful on dry roads, studded Hakka's are the way to go. I sat passenger in my friend's m3 while he ripped up mountain passes in VT with studded Hakka R8 no problem. I'm running 245/40/19 275/35/19 Alpin 5. They have a similar tread pattern to Hakka R3, however the wider rears drift a bit on corners and don't cut through snow well after a few inches, but a good compromise between dry and bad weather performance.

Studded Hakka R8s

So you will have snow/ cold weather similar to me in NJ for the most part.

Recommendation

Do not do all seasons…. The tires that are good in no weather.

I currently have blizzak LM-32's and had to do a little driving in about 6 inches of snow today and they were fantastic. Also overall they are great even in extremely cold weather as well. Dry traction is good also but I run the following

Blizzak LM-32

265/35/19
275/35/19

To stay exact to the factory tire diameter

Wheels can obviously be whatever you want but I run

Apex ARC-8's

19x9 et 22
19x10 et 25

I did not feel the need to go slimmer as that's the recommendation for winter wheels and tires.

Check my start of my journal thread I have postings of the setup

I'm leaning into the studded Hakkas big time.

Only question is what do they sound like on pavement

That should scare you lol , I had general Altimax tires on my 135i and it was my daily driver (those tires could be studded but I did not) they were GREAT in the snow , almost identical to the HAKKAS and probably half the price .

I really wouldn't recommend them unless you find yourself up in the mountains often on snow/ice packed roads. On dry pavement, they're quite loud at highway speeds and the handling feels like a liability.

If you aren't driving into mountains or don't live somewhere that get a lot of snow then a performance winter like whatever version of the Pilot Alpin is out will work fine. If you're in a reasonably snowy place then the Hakka R3's are tough to beat.

I've run both on my car and never had any real issues. My only real concern driving into the mountains was a massive snow dump that outpaced the plowing or getting stopped on either side of the Eisenhower tunnel during heavy enough snow to get trapped.

Running 245/18r45 X-ice's on 18 ZCP. Tire-rack has sales often and end up with some BBS XR's - good price and package, doesnt rub (even with spacers) and can plow through tons of snow here in Chicago.
