I had a new 1963 Corvair Monza coupe and in 1965, bought a new Corvair Corsa turbo. I had these two cars for a total of 6 years and never had a problem. The 1965, especially, was a great car.

Man you had something there with the 65. I had the 4 door 110 Hp version. a hand-me-down and the lifter tubes were leaking pretty bad, so I sold it. However, what a great handling car. The coupes were really nice looking.

Now, the old VW beetles they caught fire. VW did not put hose clamps on the fuel lines and after a few years they would slip off and pump fuel all over the engine looking for an ignition source....viola..... Fire.

Any input on the recent fires?

Apparently a good majority of BMW's are randomly catching on fire due to poor maintenance, nests and such? I find this kind of odd. What would other factors cause fires just to start even if the car was "parked" for 3 days?

Where did you come up with that? It's a miniscule number of cars over the course of many years. Do a search; there are plenty of details around here.

From your own link:

"Like many car manufacturers, BMW has issued recalls over the years for fire-related problems, but an ABC News investigation launched in collaboration with ABC-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Raleigh, found more than 40 fires occurring in parked cars across the country in the last five years involving vehicles that did not have open recalls for fire-related issues."

40 fires over five years!! - compared to the millions of BMWs sold in the last 5 years. (BMW has sold over 2 million cars each year for the last 5 years - over 10 million total). Hardly a good majority

Makes sense I was just wanting more input cause this seemed highly unlikely all of a sudden. Appreciate the response!

NE1 remember if BMW was pressed into action with regards to the HPFP issue in the N54's?

I can't remember if BMW had advance notice about the news story or if the recall was decided independently and the announcement coincided with the news story.

I don't know that you really "appreciate" what they're saying about your initial post. (And here I use the 2nd meaning of the verb "appreciate": "2. understand (a situation) fully; recognize the full implications of.")

You have completely and utterly miss-used the word "majority". As you know (I hope) "majority" means "more than one-half". BMW sells around 325,000 cars per year in the USA; 18.4 million total cars were sold in the USA in 2016, so BMW's share is about 1.8%. There are 253 million cars in the USA, so if BMW compose 1.8% of the 253 million cars that exist in the USA (a reasonable assumption) that means there are about 4,500,000 BMWs in the USA.

A "majority" of BMWs catching fire would therefore mean AT LEAST 2,250,001 fires. That number is not close to "40 fires".

Go read the BMW statement in the other thread, and the other comments in it, for more information. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1383515

Yes, thank you, was just about to post the same thing. BMW said no pattern, etc. when forums like this one had plenty of BMW owners who shared the same experience. Once ABC News aired the report about cars going into "limb home mode", BMW issues a recall.

I used to have a Z4. Although the vast majority has had no issues, there are some of us who had issues with the climate control panel just shutting off and no air coming out of the vents. Others had issues with the self leveling lights (they would just shine straight down). Also certain wheels were prone to cracking. And then of courser the HPFP issue that also plagued some of the Z4's.

Almost all owners reported back that dealers and BMW reps claimed no widespread issue, exceptions, not their fault, and so on and so forth.

Anyway, really liked my Z4 and may get a Z5 (or whatever they end up naming it) despite all that ...

Even other journalists believe it's a garbage story. This works through some statistics to note that the ABC story is garbage. (BTW, my earlier analysis was very close to what they bring forth here!)

All those fires looked like starting around firewall, and after car turned off.

Maybe they didn't lock car, maybe people expect to charge phone, but whatever it is the battery and computer are checking stuff too much and running battery down.

BMW needs to get those electrical engineers back onto fixing the electric supply system.

My 2014 X1 s28i seemed to charge all the driving time at 14.6, so I asked them to check, and they said normal. I even turned off daytime driving lights to preserve battery current.

4.9 million BMW's on American roads, forty documented fires in five years, do the math. Odds are probably better you'll get smoked by a Prius than you'll go up in smoke.
