smog in cali
I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews on how often we need to get smog check done in california. I just got my 2017 m3 beginning of this year and installed DP + Jb4, so im wondering what the answer is?
I've read some threads saying newer cars dont need smog from 2-4 years, and/or you can apply for a smog exemption? Also, for those who have DP installed, are you guys removing and reinstalling it every time? |

As to when you finally need to get it, find a good smog guy who will help you skirt the rules. Ask a local independent shop to point you in right direction.

No smog test for the first 5 years on new cars. After that, it's just a visual inspection under the hood and hook your car up to a computer to see if there is any emission warning from your car's computer. No more tailpipe test on newer cars. I forgot the exact model years tho.

unless you bought it from out of state, you don't need a smog for a while.

Yes, if you bought the car out of state you have to smog it when you first register it, even if it is brand new. Then you get a 5 year break, then every 2 years after that.
There are some parts of CA that do not have any smog requirement, typically very rural areas. |
