Money shifted from 3rd to 2nd

I was driving my f82 and as I was about to shift from redline in 3rd to 4th i accidentally shifted into second. After I did that the car drove fine then I got a drive-train malfunction code. After this I drove about 20 miles to the dealership while the malfunction was still there. Do you think I'll be fine or should i be concerned? If it was serious I don't see how I would have been able to drive it all the way to the dealership without it breaking down completely.

Best case scenario you jumped a bit of timing..worst case scenario you tapped a valve. Good luck man..once they see the overrev numbers which is probably in the neighborhood of 11k RPM you're in for a world of hurt

In MT it's not hard to make that mistake in the heat of the moment.

OP are you sure you released the clutch? Or did you just hit the rev match? I'm not sure but I don't think the computer will allow a over rev on just a rev match only. You'd need to put it in gear I'd think.

Improper grip on the shifter. Hand should not be full wrapped around shifter like holding a microphone or this can happen. Hand should be more on top of shifter like picking up eggs out of a basket and pull straight back. If you have "microphone" grip you tend to pull towards your body when pulling quickly and then you will pull towards 2nd instead of straight down into 4th.

Lol Easiest way to describe the grips without photos. Learned this from an old timer over 35 years ago when I learned to drive stick.

I can't agree with this. I've been driving exclusively manual cars for over 25 years now and I've yet to money shift a single time. Bang off the rev limiter sure, but money shifting? Hell no.

Good luck OP.

Really you can't see how this can possibly happen

Driving aggressively and trying to shift quickly from 3rd to 4th an put slight pressure towards your body and boom, you are in 2nd and over-revved.

OP I hope it turns out ok for you. I did it once years ago in my E90 M3. I clutched in immediately and was so confused and mad at myself as I had no idea how it happened. Thankfully nothing came of it and there was no damage.

Not that it's not possible, just that it's not "not hard to make that mistake". If it wasn't hard to do it, I've have done it countless times by now instead of never. If it's not nearly idiot proof, I promise you I would have broken many engines by now.

Best of luck to OP, maybe it's the crank hub?

Hope everything turns out ok! Terrible feeling, I know.

When I was still getting used to the gearbox in my S5, I pushed it from 4th to 1st. Still don’t know how I managed that. The car auto rev matched hard though, which scared the hell out of me, so don’t think I fully released the clutch. Wasn’t driving hard though, so think I still may have barely been within 1st gear speed. Immediate scanned the car and was relieved to not see an overrev code, but damn I felt terrible for a few days after....

Ok if we're going to argue semantics I guess you have a point, even if it's a bit harsh. I recall something about throwing stones in glass houses here. I figured the OP is stressed enough, no need to add to it. And honesty there have been at least a handful of times in 30 years I've shifted then thought twice before releasing the clutch, then put in neutral and started again just to be sure.

I’m guessing if he just bounced it off the rev limiter it wouldn’t have caused the malfunction code to come on. Going up the gears is never the problem, coming down is where stuff breaks. OP, I hope this wasn’t the case for you! Let us know how you make out if you feel ok.

Agreed. I only use 2 to 3 fingers max to shift and never had this issue in 8 years. OP should probably practice shifting quickly without the engine on to avoid this issue and research proper technique before redlining.
