Just to throw more data into the mix, I recently weighed my E92 M3 (Competition Package, 6MT, but all other non-individual options except for Premium Sound) with ALL fluids (I was neurotic about this; I even filled up the windshield wiper fluid to the brim, topped off gasoline, checked brake fluid--although there's no conceivable reason why I would have lost any--and I was 3/4 to max on engine oil). Hell, I even added back the car manual/owner's guide and the cigarette lighter plugs because they came with the car. I weighed in, without driver, at 3590 lbs on a CAT scale in Olympia, WA. |

This point cant be repeated enough. The new car is bigger in almost every dimension! Longer, wider, but (thankfully) lower height.

My E92 6MT last time I weighed it with 19" wheels and the stock brakes was 3530 lbs.

The difference between one quality set of scales and another is minimal. Scales aren't dyno's.
The numbers from the certified scale the red e90 is on are absolutely valid for comparison. I am obsessed with car weights and I own a set of the longacre scales as used in the photos. Comparing like models, the weight difference between the new m3/4 and the e90/92 M3 is MINIMAL. I've owned two e9x M3's and had 2 others (total of 4) on my own scales. If the difference between two cars is less than the weight of half a tank of gas they are essentially the same weight. That appears to be the case here. Additional weights will be needed to confirm. And the car really, seriously didn't need to be any bigger. |

It can't be repeated enough that it being bigger isn't a good thing , nor an excuse for being deceitful to say the least about the weight . My friends e92 M3 CP package with extended leather and DCT weighed 3600 lbs with a full tank of gas. We now know new M4 with the same options is 3585 ! Whoopdy do the same power and 15 whole pounds of weight savings . As my good friend just said this is like finding out Santa Claus wasn't real . Very disappointed M very disappointed, 3300 pounds my ass .

Oh my! I don't know what I'm going to do. This is just such terrible news. The new M3 is slightly bigger (which is a good thing for me), more powerful & substantially stronger than the old one and weights less. I hope I make it through the weekend without doing something drastic.
Anyone notice that most of the supremely disappointed people here are current E9x owners? |

We need more data points before we can reach more definitive conclusions here. Most importantly - bigger, more powerful AND less weight?? F8x is first EVER M3 generation to achieve that (glass half-full)! |

Meh. Once you drop a dct in the new m and compare it to the old, it'll end up weighing about the same as others have note. Yes, it's bigger and it's great they could save some weight given the size increase but with all the hype over the weight it's disappointing to find out it was really just hype. Not complaining over it being more powerful while weighing about the same but underwhelmed after the marketing specifically about weight.
Didn't the F30 lose about 100lbs over the e90 whiling getting larger? I'd like to see a comparison of similarly optioned 335,m235, and m3. I bet if you put the auto in each of them the weight is fairly close among the three. |

The only official information BMW has released that is specific to the F8x sold in the USA is on BMWUSA.com. On that webpage the weight is listed at 3540lbs for a 6MT. Looking at the weight shown in the original post on this thread I'd say that BMW has been fairly accurate.

The weights for the e92 seem to vary from ~3500 to ~3700 without driver. Isn't it reasonable that the f80 could weigh between ~3400 to ~3600 without driver?

I'm not being defensive in the slightest. Does it make me a troll because people that constantly complain irritate me? It just appears to me that the people being defensive and "disappointed" about the weight of the F8X are current E9X owners looking for an excuse not to like the F8X. I have no reason to be defensive. If I wanted an E9x, I'd go buy one. I've had two and I don't want another one. I almost bought one last summer. I was looking for a M3 coupe with comp package, manual and no options. I found one and took it for a test drive, I can honestly say I wasn't impressed and I didn't buy it. Don't take this wrong, I loved my E92s in '08 and '09. After owning other newer cars since then, a '13 M3 felt a little outdated. Last edited by JS919; 04-19-2014 at 01:39 PM.. |

Again nice to keep weight in check despite a slight bigger car but overall not impressed given the hype they created. |
