The DTM car is totally different from the production car except for its look from the outside. So basically DTM is the European version of US NASCAR (but with real headlight)!!! I still like to watch DTM only because that it makes the car look very cool. I personally like GT race more!

Sweet. I'll take the "run of the mill" lights over the "upgraded" hornets nest...I mean, LED lights. You are right on both points though. Looks are subjective and the LCI version will get LED's.

I really like all of these. And the grey/purple one is choice. Love those colors.

These DTM cars have more in common with a Formula one car from a aero, and development point than a Nascar.

O no doubt, I meant in terms of what the DTM cars have in common with a street car. It's a purpose built race car, that has BMW backing and marketing. That's where the similarities lie with nascar, but the tech and culture is for sure a different story.

The small winglets underneath the side rear view mirror seem to be new, wondering how much they help.

I guess they must have reworked the undertray somehow....

Why don't they use the M3 chassis for their DTM car?

It's nice to know there's an M4 under there somewhere but the fact is that's a completely different animal.
Nice to know that it still has the racing version of the E9x M3 4.0L V8 engine in it!

Selling the M4 as sportier is my guess.

R&D no doubt is why they do it but there is also a huge marketing aspect to DTM as well.

Excpept for being a 4.0L V8, the "race" engine has very little in common with the S65...

The shell that they choose to put over the carbon monocoque chassis has nothing to do with 2 door or 4 door & everything to do with which production car the manufacturer wants it to bear resemblance to in public eye. Performance will be the same. Think RC car, whether you put a shell that looks like a 7-series or a shell that looks like a 2-series on that electric motor underneath will yield that same results. Same applies to DTM.
This I know. In responding to the poster that I quoted, I'm sure BMW has a reason why they continued to use a coupe for their DTM vehicle. Perhaps to show that the M4 is "Sportier" than the M3? Who knows. However, I'd choose an M3 over an M4. Same thing applies when talking about an E90 M3 and an E92 M3. I'd choose a sedan every time. Give it time and BMW will release photos of the new DTM car with the E30 M3.

One reason, if we believe press material released earlier, is aerodynamics. Here is a quote (comparing the M4 to the M3 coupe it replaces):

Quote:
The eye-catching contoured roofline decreases the front surface area of the BMW M4 DTM and further reduces aerodynamic drag. The flatter rear window optimises the way the airflow approaches the rear wing.
The sedan would not have this advantage. Now, whether or not the rules would actually force them to use the sedan's roofline (or something similar) if they called it an M3 instead, I don't know. But it certainly makes more sense to call it an M4 if it has a greenhouse that resembles that car.

There's not a single M4 part on, under, inside, over or anywhere near that car.
This doesn't even belong in the M4 forum.
