Can I upgrade to idrive v5?

did a quick search, there is a retrofit available, but it involves hardware changes in addition to software... but definitely can be done!

Correct, there will be cost associated with acquiring the hardware in addition to getting the system coded to your vehicle. Definitely can be done... I believe bimmertech sells the hardware, but as you stated, can be a bit costly.

So on MY15, you need HW retrofit to get ID5, but is that also needed on the MY16?
Or is it doable with SW ony?

If HU_NBT2 run ID4++ from factory, it has 2GB ram and will be prone to frequent reboots if you update software. Plus, you will need new FSC set and some additional hardware if you want ConnectedDrive & OTA map updates to work.

If HU_NBT2 runs ID5++ from factory, it has 4GB of ram and you can toggle between ID5 & ID6 with coding alone.

There is a third-party retrofit in the works that should be available this summer for MY'16.

Yes, any vehicle prior to MY17 needs a retrofit in order to get iD5 or 6.

For those with a MY17 with iD5 you can code your car to get the updated iD6 skin/GUI.
