I highly doubt BMW will change the name of the M3 coupe. They made the 1MC the "1 Series M Coupe" to avoid a 30 year old super car, they're not going to change the original, more popular M3, the two-door coupe, to the M4. It might be the 4-series, but the M will have a 3 behind it.

It's pretty close isn't it?

However, the conditions for all of this rebranding to happen now might be a little more favorable. For starters, Gran Coupes, GTs, and other new vehicles are coming in various sizes. It makes for a lot of different models carrying the same badge which isn't necessarily the best situation as far as distinguishing all these products. The current 5/6 branding makes for a nice split, putting the GT with the sedan/touring and the GC with the coupe/convertible. Secondly, with the 1 series, breaking the coupe/convertible models off into the 2 series actually makes the "1M" naming issue go away. Granted, a 1 series hatchback with full M treatment would run into the same issue we have today, but such a vehicle apparently isn't on the radar (at least not yet). So then, once you have the smaller product range and the larger product range divided up across two series, it only makes sense to bring the medium-sized product range into the fold.

One thing I could see them doing as an interim step is to keep just the 3 series coupe for now, while rebranding the 3 series convertible and upcoming 3 series-based gran Coupe as the 4 series. This would allow the M3 name to remain for both the sedan and coupe for this generation, while the M4 name would naturally cover the M version of the convertible and the Gran Coupe. Few people would complain about the M4 name for the convertible since that is already everyone's favorite M model to hate on (even moreso than the larger M6 convertible, curiously). And this will also allow the marketplace to get used to the notion of the M4 brand before actually transitioning it onto the iconic M3 coupe sometime down the road, perhaps in the generation succeeding the F3x/F8x.

$10 says the coupe remains the "M3." Paypal, anyone?
$10 bucks? That's not even worth the time to login to the website. Make it $100 or more and see if you get some takers.

You are on the right way, but a little bit wrong - its much more simple, its not for the coupe ... this what you decribes is the main reason why the M3 sedan is coming back again ... this car, even when ist sells better and better from year to year (and reached the convertible this year!), has only few lovers by BMW ... the only reason to bring him back, is to allow BMW to change the coupes and the convertible to the M4 lables ... and not to let the M3 Lable die before the M4 Lable is introduced in the market ... and when all have switched over to the M4 and ... "the better M3" is the new hero ... BMW would let the sedan and the lable M3 die ( in the next generation! )

for all of you saying that the first m3 was a sedan and not a coupe please change the word "coupe"for "two doors car" and that about settles it. the m3 with 2 doors should be called m3, thats how its been and thats how it should be. as I doubt bmw will make a 2 door sedan, the m3 should happen to be the coupe version, but the main point is, we need the 2 door version to be called m3 and not m4.
edit: looking at the e46 design, the coupe and the sedan share the same rear so as the e46 m3 is definitely a coupe, should you guys who call the 2 door e30 a sedan, name the e46 "sedan" as a 4 door coupe? its the same logic

Each person has their opinion, you have those who don't mind and those that do. I fall into the latter because I know about the heritage that the badge has, especially in my country where it is a bit of a culture icon. People in this culture don't care what shape you have, what they care about is the performance that a letter and a number bring, M3. Ask anyone what an M3 is to them and you'll get responses with a look of envy or a look of admiration. People know this beast as an M3, you see that badge and already people know its something special. More importantly, whoever is driving the car can feel that it is special. In fact, I feel proud to know that I am driving a legend, that even though this may not be light, may not be a successor to the original E30 M3, it still holds the badge of the M3 and with it, the history. I am proud to show off my M3 because I know what it represents. This is all my opinion of course.

Changing to another badge renders all the hard work that you did to make an icon of the previous one null and void. Lets hope this just stays a rumour.

I can't believe we are going all over again over the M4 thing….

Are you kidding me that the BMW board will consider change their mind? It was a very strong statement before the got the E92 that the M3 brand will stay strong and no M4 ever….

Why would you name the new Sedan M3 and the Coupe M4? That seems backwards to me. The coupe is the one that needs to remain an M3 if there is to be any change in the future. I look at the Sedan as the Family version of the sportier M3 coupe, not the other way around.

Does this mean the M3 Gran Coupe isn't going to happen? Sorry if I missed it somewhere else.

Let us not forget this quote from the M-Power.com interview with Kay Segler July 8, 2010...

"How important is the BMW M3 to BMW ?
As far as BMW M GmbH is concerned it is the core model, the backbone. No other BMW M automobile embodies the values of our brand more consistently. This applies not just to BMW M but to BMW as a whole."

The M3 brand supposedly matters to at least BMW.
If the rumors are true, then is M Division abandoning the values of the brand?

Yes, also I am happy that V6 is not completly ruled out. I do prefere I6 over V6, but if it is just an N55 with two turbos, and nothing like the S54, no thank you. I really hope, using so much tech, the V6 will redline at 8.000 RPM.

Am thrilled that they are keeping the sedan but why screw with the names!!

an M3 should just be KEPT an M3

that is B.S! so we are to expect a 2 series and then an M2 so will end up with a line up of

1M Coup, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, WHY NOT A FREAKIN' M7!

Actually think the 1M will go away. It will become the M2. Even numbers equal 2-dr coupes. M2, M4, M6 all two doors and M3 and M5 will be sedans.

Change is the only constant in this world... get used to it.
