NO ... an electric Turbo doesn´t exist , this people are misunderstandig the BMW patent. In this patent the E-Motor drives the Turbosystem directly and not by air like an electric supercharger !!!

There are only two alternatives:

- I6 with 1 greater TwinScroll and "eTurbo" - could perhaps be quoted as TriTurbo by BMW terms.

- I6 with 2 TwinScrolls and "eTurbo" - quoted as Biturbo or perhaps OuadTurbo.

The first is what has been described to me- as the eTurbo does not need two scrolls as it was explained to me.

You might also like to see that the mainstream media has now picked up on our reporting....

Friday I heard from my source and posted elsewhere as was confirmed by your source as well and today Road and Track are reporting the same.

Light car / powerful engine

A M3 should have a strong engine and light weight otherwise we'll mede to get used to see Porsches passing us by...

My guess would be a centrifugal style. Basically an electric motor drives a gear reduction impeller. Would probly only be used to spool up the smallest turbo most likely....

They could use higher voltage to run it???? The could use a combo a/c compressor with a built in high voltage alternator that could recharge a small high voltage battery to power it???

How I understand the BMW Electric Turbo Drive Patent it works as follows:

The E-Motor is conected with an clutch directly to the turbo scroll.
- at low rpm it drives the turbo alone, so that it could charge the engine despite low exhaust pressure.
- at middle rpm where are enough exhaust pressure it would be disconected via the clutch.
- at high rpm it reduces boost pressure by working as generator and producing energy for the battery ... because of this there would no need for the (sensitive) pop-off-valves.

Maybe someone has a better explanation!?

Confirmed everything you listed. It will use a planetary gear set. No blow off valves.

hmmm.. i think they should do a light weight higher displacement inline 6 with a twin turbo system. I don't know if the new electric turbos system (guessing) will be appropriate for an ///M

Can you give more details on the Performance Package, Uli? Available at launch? Europe only? Can it be retrofitted at a later date to soften the learning curve for owners?

I'm sure it's far too early to know those answers, but still...

600 Nm seems too much. Rather 550 Nm. Other wise it should either have 475 PS or rev only till 6.000 RPM, unless the TriTurbo does some magic.

Ugh, potentially different power levels available in the M3 or M4 or whatever it will be called. It will cost BMW precisely $0 (software) to offer different power levels and they will be charging at least $3k (USD) for the little power bump.

Bad BMW, bad.

Everything costs money, even software.

Yeah, I know, I am in the software business. What I meant, more precisely and in more detail, is that the cost of the physical items in the different engine level cars will be precisely zero. Similarly the cost for BMW to develop the software to increase turbo boost will be miniscule. To be fair a significant amount of testing will need to be done, but that is the only cost. Their profit margin on this options will probably be higher than the margins on most other options.
