Never say never. All depends on what the car is being used for and which car/tranny you are driving. I have never money shifted on the street but when I used to drag race back in the day, it did happen some time going from 3 to 1. When you are trying to set high 10's, low 11's in a 1/4 miles, every 100th of a second counts and sometimes mishifts, money shifts can occur.

I know what money shifting is and watching HUD will tell u which gear u shifted so for wrong downshifting u can immediately clutch in . Bottom line HUD helps
If you are shifting very fast there is no way the HUD will help. It takes fractions of a second to shift from 3rd to 4th (or 2nd in the case of a money shift).

Also speaking for myself, I never use the HUD for confirmation of which gear i am in since I always know (I had to manually move the lever there after all).

OP, 3 seconds is a really really long time. When you heard the rpm shoot up instant reflex should be to push the clutch in. The fact that you shifted in 2nd when redlining in 3rd is not good. BMW Will be able to see if that happened so just hope nothing got bent though I would be surprised if it didn't.

Good luck.

Goes without saying, don't tell the dealer you money shifted.

I understand that mistakes happen, but how was the money shift for 3 seconds?! There is no way you wouldn’t have immediately pushed in the clutch at least out of confusion.

To add on to the “egg in the basket” method lol, I just make it a habit of having my thumbs face down from 3rd to 4th and 5th to 6th. I don’t see any other way to money shift outside of that.

What ended up happening?

The rev match begins before you even put the car into gear. When it happens you immediately know that you are going into a lower gear which can help you avoid going all the way into the gear and releasing the clutch.

This is how I learned to help avoid that. See here for the technique with pics:

Sorry to hear man I've had a few close calls in the past myself and I've been driving manuals for over 20 years.

Let us know what transpires.

Yes this is what i meant. I can see why “thumbs down” was very vague lol. I have never gotten into the habit of using the same technique from 2nd to 3rd. I got scared of money shifting during my s2000 ownership

This is actually really solid - I don’t know about you guys but I’ve always taken that extra quarter second extra with the clutch pressed in whenever downshifting just so I know I’m where I need to be.

Anyone else do this?

You guys have got it all wrong, the best way to prevent a money shift is...

...to move to a RHD country, where money shifts don't exist! :P

Is the gear shifting pattern the same in a RHD country as LHD or is it mirrored in RHD from LHD?

It's the same, you're just sitting on the other side

I think in RHD countries you're more likely to pull from 3rd to 6th gear with your left hand, resulting in no damage.
