M Performance Splitter & Lip install

Fun for this weekend. Going to follow the write up by KHATTI http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...hlight=lip+DIY, however looking for any pointers by anyone who has done this.

Looking forward to hearing how you go with this

I looked at tackling this myself with a mate (as I did all my previous E90 M3 carbon lip / spoiler mods myself) but in the end I decided to get BMW to install it on my F80 as its not as straight forward a job as I had anticipated, even with the instructions.

In any case, your car will look mean!

Didn’t get around to working on the car last weekend.
Did this on Sat morning, and for the rest of the weekend I was not in the mood to work on the install. Fruiting McDonalds Drive-Through.

job done. Wasn't too difficult, although not having a correct plastic rivet tool was more painful than I thought. I have ordered one just to finish off the rivets.

One thing I am not sure about is the last part in the instructions fittings these. Not very clear on what to do with them and I don't think this looks right. Thoughts anyone?

I have some splitters that I grabbed from the classifieds and I'm wondering the same thing. There is double sided tape on them but I'm not sure if the previous owner added that or it is factory.

The official BMW instructions state to use Betalink adhesive, however I decided to go with double sided 3M Automotive tape (Might have got carried away with how much I used ). Especially since there are a ton of screws that go through the lip into the splitters anyway.

It's always good to use "too much" double sided tape than not enough. As long as it's held in place securely, you should be fine. You can of course beta link adhesive as well, but the double sided 3M is preferred option for us

Seems like a lot of people use the double sided tape over the betalink - why is that?

Betalink is permanent. If you do manage to get the part off you'll loose the paint with it.

I have removed a spoiler with betalink it required a lot of fishing lines and a lot of elbow grease to remove the residue. Paint was still intact afterwards no damage. However, if you were using it on your carbon splitters, there’s no chance you could remove it.

Does look nice but I thought the actual lip part was meant to be carbon finish as well?

you can buy it in plastic or carbon

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...&q=51192410360

the plastic version is actually meant for painting, that's how bmw debuted it all those many years ago, but most just leave it raw unpainted

Well the options were carbon or the plastic lip. Having lips on other cars, I know the scraps and knocks that can and do occur, so I decided against the carbon. To paint or not paint was something I mulled over for a while. But decided to go with the matt plastic look which I don’t mind with the black sapphire paint. Besides, I can always paint or carbon fiber wrap if I change my mind.
Anyway, onto the rear of the car next.

Ah, that makes sense now. That white one above looks good and the one we have on our car has been painted red. It is quite striking and not sure if I would have painted it but it came that way.

I agree the matt black is more subtle and still does the job and is still one of the best looking F series lips.

I would also imagine that the carbon one would have cost a lot more, but then painting is also extra!
