Thumbs up Cabin heats up quickly compared to other cars

Has anybody else noticed just how quickly BMW's make heat for the cabin? Much quicker than other cars I've owned. how do they do that?

I believe that the car probably has a small electric heater that's power by the Li-On battery. Only way i can see the car providing heat when the auto start/stop is activated.

I've noticed that too. My wife drives a 2018 S4 and it takes MUCH longer to warm up.

Love it!

Sure, the fan can keep running since it is electric. But you think the car needs an electric heater because the engine instantly gets cold when the ignition stops? Once the block is hot, it's going to stay that way for quite a while. Much longer than the minute or two the ignition is off.

I'm guessing the temperature gauge shown on the dash has mostly to do with oil temperature. Oil temperature takes a while to get up there compared to coolant temperature. But the hot coolant is used in the heater core.

Not that any of this makes a difference to me in SoCal.

I dunno, some of those mornings get chilly in SoCal! Waking up in the 40s, heater makes a difference

I have noticed it mostly when parking outside in South Florida during the summer. Very hot, very quick.

The same can be said about the air conditioning. In the cold New Jersey winters, the air conditioning blows very cold.

I've noticed it too..the seat warmers as well. We've had a colder-than-normal winter here...with several days in the single digits and some <0 F also. Car always warms up fairly quickly.

Definitely a plus from previous generations. My wife constantly praises how quickly it warms up in -10 deg weather compared to the previous e92 m3 etc.

I've also noticed the HVAC blows hot air very quickly, even if the car has been parked overnight and is completely cold.

The engineers at BMW cleverly solved two problems. Annoyed by the incessant blathering from the marketing department, they created a way to channel that hot air into the cabins of our cars. They bask in solitude while we bask in warmth.

I think it relates to the design of the cooling system and the use of electrical pumps, in addition to the primary engine driven pump, to manage the flow of coolant to the various elements of the system. On the S55, the cabin heat exchanger has its own dedicated electrical pump (11), so on startup the engine coolant likely is only circulated to the cabin heat-exchanger for a faster warm-up.

This makes a lot more sense than the car having an electric heater!

My '15 M3 blasts warm air from the vents faster than any other car I've ever had for the past 35 yrs! (Including NY winters)
