This is lunacy.
This will cost you mileage (more mass on the drivetrain is a negative), they won't deduct the CF vs steel differential but you'll be pay for that wonderful petrol filter now (regular maintenance). Which by the way is useless in 99% of conditions. Disgusted. I get that you need to install the filter But rather re-routing the gas line and moving the filter to a location which was perhaps more difficult, they chopped a pricey component which you valued for the sake of their simplicity and new bottom line. Engineering isn't simple, it always takes dollars into account. When it came to this, they took the easy way out which was money. It's as simple as that. Honestly. It's just apparent they will charge you the same amount of the CF DS but keep it for themselves knowing that few will notice, fewer will complain, but everybody will love how it still looks. |

BmwAG has fiduciary duty to its owners/shareholders to maximize profits. If the company's accountants figured out a way to squeeze costs out of a part without detrimentally affecting safety/sales/branding of the car, they better take advantage of the savings. All other considerations are noise.
Those that are unhappy with the change have a viable recourse. They can choose not to buy the car. |

jeez...calm down...all this hype with change in driveshaft...it's not like it's gonna make a difference in yall 35mph driving commute to work, just 1 less thing to brag about F80 in your local car meet...
The F80 was already a "restricted", downgrade M car to begin with...nothing surprising here...tuned turbo I6, electric steering, the proud oled light technologies, larger volume, made best for everyone in your commute 3 out of 5 guys I know who own F80 M3 don't even know how to rev match an engine...hence never used manual mode of their DCT, that's the truth of M3 market these days...

If being on the camry platform means an M3 can beat the Cadillac around the track then so be it. Since it cant do it now on a BMW only platform. Hell took over a about a decade for the M3 to catch up to the Supras performance, maybe sharing a platform with toyota wont be so bad. |

Ford dropped the carbon fiber driveshaft on the top spec Mustang too (GT500 to GT350) I'm guessing the price/performance ratio didn't make sense for them either.

I believe that we all know very well as many has mentioned that BMW M division kept hyping the use of CF in the new M3's and M4's, weight reduced, stronger components bla bla bla. So if the current CF driveshaft having issues than this thread will be flooding with it and until today I have not heard of one DS broke or whatsoever.
On the other hand the Driveshaft and emissions? again doesn't make a damn sense here... This is simple they are testing it for the new M3/M4 so they thought to replace all production cars Nov.2017 - untill the end of the production with this, they have simply answered us by saying also that none of u has noticed that next gen. M3-M4 will not have a CF DS! That decision is clear: 1- Cost cutting 2-test new steel DS for next generation M3-M3 because they know not many cars will be sold during that period or else they wouldn't reveal their 68K sales before the end of this current model

I'm surprised no one has brought this up yet, but...
Maybe it's because the CFDS was so light and rigid , thats what was causing the jerky throttle starts. I know in mine, it happens very easily, and once it starts , you have to completely back off the throttle until it stops. Mine is a DCT BTW, and happens in all throttle mappings under the right conditions.

This could be a reason but it is difficult to know for sure I guess we will know soon enough once the new car will start to hit the roads!

Who da FK cares really?! Non of this will stop any of us future M car owners from buying(well maybe). If you planned to go elsewhere then do so and tell your story, but please stop your damn bitching about every god-damn-thing you don't like about the current changes.
