Update:
I went in to the dealer last week with the above issues as stated by all the other hundreds of posters to have this looked at/add it so my service records. I know some of the followers feel that resolve is to bend back the plate 1-2" and all will be good- and that may be the end-all-be -all fix. To make a long story short, I spoke to a manager who took a ride with me around the block, and the sounds were replicated. Shortly after he said "Well there is a replacement part for this." I let him order up the parts because he insisted. Yesterday during my 1200 mile run in service, he tells me that he has the "new" parts and wanted to schedule me in to replace them... I asked for the part numbers first to refer to the forum to see if these are actual Version 3 of the plates. Part Number(s) 34 20 8 053 265 34 20 8 053 266 |

Wait, there's a version 3? Damn... I haven't been following this thread since I got my original ones replaced. I still get a rock stuck from time to time, but they work themselves out a lot quicker than they did with the original shields.

Well the listed P/N's are for reference to see are duplicates from past replacements. The manager said "the parts are listed on the service bulletin so its no secret". Im not going to get these installed if they aren't the V. 3's.

Im not sure, but I'd assume that they will. Still waiting to see if anyone out there has a contact to verify that these are indeed V. 3 or if its a hoax. Anyone??!! |

Hi everyone,
Just bought my first BMW (M4 Cnv + CP) and it happened to have the same issue. Took it in last week for my break in service and the dealership have ordered the replacement rear brake shields. Will see if this resolves it.....! Best, Socalm4fan |

How long did it take to have them replaced? I dropped my car off Monday AM and the SA just called me to say it might be ready tomorrow morning. 4 days to replace brake shields?!?

Seriously. I mean, I wouldn't be driving it this week anyway since it's not a daily driver, but this is ridiculous. And they feel like they did me a favor giving me an X3 as a loaner.

Having a similar issue for the first time since getting th car almost 2 years ago. Got a metal to metal scraping sound coming from the rear wheels. Pushed the heat shields back, same noise after, took wheels off and checked with a flash light, same sound after. Made an appointment for tomorrow to get it looked at, bummer because I'm taking a few days off from work to spend with my son and now I have to deal with this!

I have a MY17 (Nov 16 build date) M3 and in my first 600 miles of ownership I have had this issue happen a few times. Each occurance only lasted a few seconds, which based what I have read in this thread means the small pebble fell out very quickly, potentially due to the new design.
So my question is, is there any way to tell which variant shields I have installed without removing the rotor? I would think I have the latest variant based on the build date of my car. I have the tools to do it, but I would rather not pull the rotors on my very new car if I don't need to (I saw the pics posted earlier in this thread). Especially since the problem still occurs even with the newest version of the shields based on the info in this thread.

To answer your question, I think you need to get it on a lift, and the numbers are on the inside closets to the Diff. |

I think 2hrs was book time...? They probably had to order you the parts & maybe the parts took a while to come in seeing that every single dealership is ordering them for M cars. Shouldn't have taken 4 days though.

No, they ordered the parts about three weeks ago when I was in there last. I even got an email telling me the parts were in. Not super happy it's taken this long, but I don't drive it during the week, so it hasn't been too much of an inconvenience. |

So I went back in to try and bend the shields even harder and was able to get them to bend inward even more than before at the lowest point closest to the ground. It sounded like I almost snapped it out of place, once that happened a lot of these little pebbles fell out all over the place. I then snapped the shields back into place and went out for a test drive and the noise is gone, worked like a charm and canceled my dealer appointment at the same time. |
