The 4 series convertible seats have an ' air scarf' which blows hot pot air onto the necks of the front passengers from vents in the headrest so the M4 convertible would not have been able to use the same seats as M3/4. I guess the cost/ benefit of designing a new seat specifically for the M4 convertible was deemed not worth it so they used the regular 4 series seats which come with the thigh extenders.
