Individual Color Request Time to Approval?

Those that have done and individual build on a NON-existing color, how long did it take for BMW to approve?

I put my build in for Interlagos blue for a 2018 F80 build on 7/3.

With M3 production ending 10/2018, I am not confident this is a possibility (with R&D) even if it was approved.

You can follow my thread here to get an idea but it took me 9 days to get approved.

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1396768

However, I dont see why you arent confident given that the production ending is not for another year and 2 months 10/2018 vs 10/2017 and you put in your request 11 days ago. It definitely doesnt take more than a year. I would say you will know by the end of next week. Have you called BMW Genius? What does you VIR say?

As to your color, I believe RowanBuds got denied for interlagos blue so dont know if they will make it for the M3. But his probably was because of the short time between his request and his ED date. Good luck! Hope they do.

I'm dumb... 2018 > 2017. I am thinking there is 16 weeks left of m3 production period...

Thank you for the insight!

You should hear back within a couple of weeks, and I doubt there will be any R&D costs as it's already a BMW color. The F80's factory has the more modern paint facilities to be able to handle just about any color (the M4 coupe is built at an older plant so some colors get rejected that would be approved on the M3).

Good luck. Even if they don't approve it, you have a lot of blues to choose from.

Not yet... any of the experts think I should be concerned?

The only reason I went with this dealer is because they said they had an allocation, but now they are saying the order won't even get a response until August?

What should I be asking for as proof that the order was submitted?

Ask for a VIR (Vehicle Inquiry Report) of your order. Or, you can email individual@bmw.de. However I would ask your CA for the VIR. If you follow my thread posted above you will see what they VIR should say re individual color.

Yes.. what Thescout13 said...

E-mail individual@bmw.de with your production number and your question, and they will respond in 2 business days. That will likely get you in touch with someone who can do a far better job than the dealer can of explaining where you are in the process and next steps.

There is a LONG thread about Interlagos Blue being denied previously on the forum. To save you the read, the belief is that some of the older (90s era and before) paints have been deemed environmentally unfriendly in some fashion, and Interlagos is one of them. This is why some BMW paints are now "II" such as Estoril Blue II, Santorini Blue II, Imola Red II, Ruby Red II, Dakar Yellow II, etc. The II versions are environmentally friendly that BMW has paid the R&D costs to formulate a new version of.

If it is denied, ask Individual if you can pay the R&D costs for a new paint that is the same shade as Interlagos (effectively Interlagos Blue II that you would pay for). If not, then it may be a BMW policy not do allow customers to pay the R&D costs for a paint they own - they prefer to do it themselves on their own time schedule. Of course that will increase the cost of your paint into the $7-8k range, so make sure you're OK forking over that amount of dough before going down that path.

It's strange, but I sort of get where BMW is coming from. It's their paint. They will do a reformulation. They won't allow a customer to pay to do it for them. The issue with Interlagos specifically is that it is a very similar shade to San Marino, so BMW may just feel they don't want to bother with it.

The bizarre thing is that you could go to Porsche and ask for a PTS (paint-to-sample) 911 done in Interlagos Blue and they will happily do that paint for you, for a fee of course , because it is not an original Porsche color. Same reason BMW will paint any Porsche colors you want on their cars - it's not a BMW color.

Regardless, you need to contact Individual at the e-mail above to get anywhere with this, so do that now.

Exactly, thanks TonySCV for the advice the other day. Also, if you happen to be doing ED delivery as well (which I assume from your post you are not) the people in the ED department at BMW NA are very helpful in explaining the process.

Ended up canceling my order. Dealer never had an allocation (but was happy to take my deposit for 30 days).

Not sure what is next.
