The assistant sales manager at my dealer told me that their first delivery is at the port in Halifax, but BMW Canada will not release it until the official June date. The customer for that car is very disappointed as he expected to be able to take delivery this month.

Not too surprising to hear that. That's typical for product launches for BMW NA, and probably for some other regions as well (though perhaps to a lesser extent). There's always a hard date before which they won't deliver the cars.

I'm not sure exactly why they have to wait; jumping through regulatory hoops and waiting for legal hurdles to be cleared could likely be part of it. Whatever the reason, the stockpiling of the cars at such an early date has always seemed a little strange. You'd think they could be actually selling and delivering them in other regions instead. Why not time them to come off the boat in May or even June instead of now? They have this multi-bazillion dollar just-in-time manufacturing infrastructure that can get the cars built in the exact quantities they need only to have them delivered on a date that is months earlier than it needs to be.
