I confess. I have done this before with my 335. Not saying that's the problem here though. I'm just saying that it happens.

Could be someone is messing with you. Since you can use the BMW remote app to do quite a bit with the car just from a smartphone.

Even worse, I've accidentally set off the panic alarm while the keyfob was in my pocket. Have no idea how long the alarm was going off either.

You're all wrong. It the poltergeist living in the trunk. You need an exorcist.

haha I thought I was the only one this happened to. Many times my trunk would open on its own. No key in the pocket. Strange.

I have had this issue while driving. My key was in my backpack in the backseat(without button being pressed) and when i got off the highway a homeless person started pointing and yelling... i was convinced he was just one of those crazy ones that talk to themselves until i happened to glance in the rear view to see my trunk open. I got out and closed it..drove off and at the next light the damn thing opened again. This happened at the next 2 traffic lights..once the car slowed down the trunk would fly open. Hasnt done it since so i dont know what the hell was going on but now i constantly look.

I thought it was the key being pressed too but it was just sitting in a little pocket in my backpack with nothing else so i know that couldnt have been it.

When I waved my foot left and right, it's very hard to make it work. Also doesn't work if you stand closer than 1 feet as it's a safety feature so the trunk lid doesn't hit you in the head when it opens.
Thanks I will try that again I guess I am just to close

My alarm would go off at random about 4 times a day. The solution for me was to wrap the key in foil. The panic was no longer being activated and later my wife confessed to dropping water in her bag and soaking the keys. I dried the keys in a dry rice bowl and the issues been solved

I wonder if there was something under the car triggering the sensor under the rear bumper?

Happened to our 428i about 3-4 times already with keys sitting on the table, very strange. Hasn't happened to the M4 yet, knock on wood.

happened to me few weeks back while washing the car. when spraying water at lower rear bumper it popped open. key was on my garage workbench. so i assumed water ran down underneath rear and somehow triggered the foot sensor.

Happens every time I dry my car with towels near the rear fender with my key fob in my pocket.

Finding Trunk Open

Ok... This is weird. I've come back out of the store to find my trunk open. Car locked, but trunk wide open. (Like an idiot)

This is the 2nd time this has happened to me. The first time I chucked it up to maybe, just maybe I bumped the keys in my pocket or something.

Both times i had locked the door by touching the door handle and I'm sure I would have noticed the trunk open as I left the car. So it happened sometime between when I walked away from the car and when I came back.

Anyone else have this happen?

Do you wear tight pants? If so tight pants and some bending movement or turning could have caused the trunk release to be pressed as you were walking away. Its happened to me too but only once and I was able to recreate it by sitting down (I have big thighs) and positioning my leg a certain way causing the button to be pressed.

^^^^ This

Being a foreigner (or maybe just strange) I put my keys and wallet in my front pocket (nothing ever in my rear pocket) so on sitting, it had a habit of pressing the trunk release and popping it open.

Another possibility - do you have a carbon fiber diffuser?

This time my keys where in a loose pouch in my book bag. Low chance of accidentally getting pressed.

Thing is, this NEVER happened to be before in my life. I'm considering ripping off the internal button on the board inside the key fob just to be sure. (Or just a drop of superglue on the inside of the case)

Wow, it has happened to me twice at work. I just thought I hit the button on the fob, but now Im wondering if it's a flaw. I don't have comfort access.

Both times it has happened it's been at work and my car is pretty far away from where I am in the building, so unless it went off as I was putting the keys in my pocket I don't think it was me hitting it by mistake.

Ahh ha! I finally caught it! In my garage, keys in my hand. I know I wasn't pressing any buttons. Walked past the rear bumper of the car (kind of close), past my wife's car, and I see the garage light up red (lights flashing while opening trunk). I turn around the the trunk is up! Totally quiet. If i wasn't in the garage and could see the reflection of the lights blink, I would have never noticed, I was too far away at that point. In a parking lot, it would have remained opened the entire time until I got back to the car.

I think part of the problem is there is no verbal notification this has occurred, couple that with a multi second delay from when it gets triggered and you just don't notice it.

My SUV beeps when it opens, so you would definitely notice it if your back was turned and it opened.

Had this happen for the first time last week. I have the CF diffuser so the kick function doesn't work. It was 110 degrees, it would open on its own, I'd close it and then it would pop open again. Key in hand. Weird.

That's exactly right. I don't know why people keep waving their foot around. Does anyone read the manual? You have to interrupt two sensor signals. You simply do a simple forward and back kick right in middle. It also works 100% of time for me. The manual clearly spells this out.
