M Performance Suspension Clicking
Hey all,
I've had a pretty good experience with the M Performance suspension up until recently. I had it lowered to the max, added front sway bar end links, and recently the suspension started clicking when the wheel is turned. I can get it to click when the car is stationary and turn the wheel in either direction. Additionally, there is clunking noise when the car goes over bumps. Any ideas on where to look to solve this issue? I changed my brakes yesterday, torqued lug nuts, etc. and the issue is still there so I'm sure it's related to the suspension. Thanks for any help! |

Here is a pic of one of the front springs, the darker part I am assuming is plastic insulator? Some people have recommended adding motor grease / lubricant to them?

Do you know if they loaded the suspension when tightening the sway bar link? Nine out of ten times the noise you're describing is that.

Sounds like the end link nut is not properly tightened. Had a very similar issue when I had my Dinan sway bars installed. They came with new end links and one of the nuts on the end link stripped. It was loose and making noises just like you are describing.

Yes. See above. It's a common issue when installing suspension. The suspension should be loaded when tightening. In other words a jack or something comparable under the strut pushing up and applying pressure while tightening or torquing things down properly.

Agreed, sway bar noise is a often a problem. I did the Dinan ‘thrust arm ‘ bearing replacement and two months later the clinking began.... fixed by tightening the sway bar

Double check your install.
Like others have said, check the torque on the sway bar endlink, they are often the source of the noise. On lowered cars you can run out of articulation on the end links so check that with as well. You should be able to get a good look at the link with the wheel at full lock. Coil contact could result in a click or clunk as well. |

We were seeing service life of 50K miles on the E8x E9x chassis. It would be good to know on the F chassis as some are getting up there in mileage. |

I’ve recently had my MPHAS reinstalled to change out the camber plates back to stock. Interesting the standard top mount had concentric wear in it where the damper rod goes.
I came across the thread below and I’m pretty sure this is my issue. It sounds like spring ping which is confusing matters but I’m sure this is in fact the problem. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1402135 See video on page 2. The clunk is probably related and not anything to do with the worn top mount as it was present with the camber plates. Hopefully of some help. |

I have had bad noises since the MPHAS install and have just got them sorted thanks to the post linked below.
I checked bmwtis for torque values and it siren turns out the bolt holding the strut into the carrier was way over torqued. I bought a new bolt and but from BMW and retorqued to correct 56nm. Unbelievable. Quiet as a church mouse! I also redid the drop links at same prescribed value while I was in there. My guess this is the real problem and you got the fix as I’m sure your Bmw tech put the correct torque values in as he was putting it all back together. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1402135 |
