Drove manual's forever, got DCT in 135i and got bored, sold after 1.5 years and bought manual and now have manual 2015 M3. Have AT in my CTS-V if I need to drive in traffic or just want a less engaging experience.

Went away from a manual last time. Never again. Or at least - I won't do it again as long as there is a manual still offered.

Drove both, was a easy decision after that... Picked up a AW m4 6speed manual. No regrets and love it. Dct is boring for me, will be more maintenance, and cost more to fix in the future when the car is out of warrenty. Plus lets not forget 6 speed manual is the lighter tranny.

My thoughts:

I had a manual e92 M3 and now I have a DCT F80 M3. Both were/are my daily driver. My work commute is mostly busier 45-50 mph main roads with traffic lights but I'll hit the highways into Philly or down to the shore on the weekends. So I have a good mix of traffic and highway cruising.

I'm a manual guy through and through. I loved my manual e92 M3 and never once regretted my decision for manual in that car. I never once complained about having a manual car in traffic so that aspect never bothered me. That car was so analog tho with manual seats, NA V8 that a manual fit its character, IMO. Plus, there was no auto-rev match nonsense; you were in control of your own heel/toe and rev-matching which was super rewarding.

The F80 rocks with the DCT, no doubt. I enjoy the speed, effectiveness and crispness of the shifts but I do find myself wanting to row my own on occasion. Being able to throw it in auto every once and a while is nice, though.

It's been a while since I drove an F8x in manual, so I'm not sure how it compares to the DCT cars, but I have been driving a ton of 991.1 Carreras in 7mt and the driving experience in those cars definitely needs manual; besides I hate that the PDK creeps when you let your foot off the brake.. one of the cool features of the BMW DCT I like is that it doesn't creep until you tip in some throttle.

So I said a lot of words with no real impact.. final verdict: For the F80, I think DCT is the way to go. For my next car, which is hopefully a 911, I will be going back to manual.

For those that say DCT is boring, there is a little button with three lines on it. Press it twice so that all 3 lines are engaged.

Then tune your car. My car kicks like a mule when in DCT-3.

You have to pay attention or you will get sideways real fast. Nothing boring about that. In DCT-3 it's like a punch in the back when you shift. DCT setting 1 is similar to auto and boring. I mainly use DCT-2, and it still shifts firm.

But DCT-3 is seriously pay attention. I will always love double de-clutching in a manual, and heel toeing. But I don't have to do that in my daily driver. Traffic is getting worse, so really appreciate DCT.

Porsche Turbo S next for me, and I will get PDK. The launch control on the P-car is next level.

It is just too good and too fast to ever think of going back and I would consider myself a good manual driver. That, to me, says a lot about the DCT.

All my previous cars were stick shift manuals, including my E36 M3 and E46 M3. No regrets at all on the DCT on current M4. Will never go back to inferior, old stick shift.

Went to DCT from my 6MT E92... never ever going back. If you get bored, stick it in S3 and shift yourself. My track times are so much better and I can focus on my lines not my left foot. Oh... and I wont need another left knee surgery from sitting in LA traffic 5 days a week.

Not on this car but I went from a 6MT e90 m to a DCT e92 m and really regretted it. Just really boring to me. Pretty clunky in D mode too which kinda removes the whole point imo. I had the GTS tune.

Both my F8x have been manual with no regrets. I wouldn't have bought this car if it didn't have a manual option.

Sorry a "kick in the pants" in s3 doesnt make it anymore engaging to all the youre doing it wrong if you don't like it guys.

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek; obviously, I can't tell you what YOU need in a car to make it enjoyable. I love the DCT, but from all accounts the 6MT is also a pleasure. Thank you BMW for making these great options available.

Don't kid yourself. The decision would be quite difficult if the manual was actually good.
What is the source that you used to derive a conclusion that the F8X has a average 6MT?

I think running a 1/4 in the 11s in a 6MT counters your "doesn't like to be shifted fast" comment and auto rev-match is disabled in Sport+.

Had a DCT E90 M3, was super bored, got a 6MT F80 M3 and love it. My M2 will also be 6MT. I don't like the DCT programming shifting up all the time keeping the car under 2500 rpm.

Drive it in manual mode with the paddle shifters, then you have full control just like a stick.

Full control of the shift points and RPMs (his expressed concern) is what I was addressing.
