I realy have huge respect for OP knowing that experimenting with a new exhaust type is no joke !
Why I know this ? Is because I've done the Oem.exhaust mod on my E92 by myself and sounds just perfect .
For OP I want to say...Congrats man at least an F80 that sounds realy good !
You should keep it this way ,because perfect work was done here...

With the Magnaflow, is there any welding involved or anything? Or is it just taking off the catalytic converter and replacing it with the Magnaflow?

Very interesting. Excellent write up. I was curious about all of these various avenues as far as modding the exhaust for now before changing for the Eisenmann. Thanks for the info

Incredible write up. Can you confirm the following:

-Your exhaust valve is disabled and left in the wide open position?

Its interesting that you found out the secondary cats are the cause of the poor sound and drone.

I currently have the exhaust valve in the wide open position and like you said, have drone in the low RPM's, but overall I do like it since you can "feel" where your engine speed is at now.

Again, thanks for the great post

Interesting, much less expensive than down pipes is that what made you go with center pipes instead of down pipes?

Yup, I am very happy with current setup. It's perfect for daily car.

Welding is required since you have to cut secondary cats.
It's recommended to take to reputable shop to get welding done. Some shop will weld this without taking exhaust system off.
While do-able, it won't produce clean weld.

That is correct. My valve is always wide open no matter what speed/mode.
Secondary cats help to reduce drone but it doesn't do as welll as magnaflow muffler. Once you install magnaflow, it will eliminate most of the drone you hear now.

I actually decide to not to install any dp on this car because I simply cannot stand catless gas smell.
Also, I heard that main cats on dp has fairly good flowing metallic cats on it.
If that's the case, it would be pointless to get aftermarket dp with highflow cats.

IMO, sounds terrible. Sounds like a 328 on steroids. Sorry Op, but I think you gotta pay to play on making this car sound good. AKRA, seems the only way so far.

Thank you for sharing and taking the time and initiative to make this combo Its Members like this that makes being part of the bimmerpost community such a joy

This is definetely somethinng id be interested in Next year when i get my M3. I love this mod. Huge fan of saving money and making my own exhaust like on my F30 .

Was there a baseline dyno done 1st? Just curious if there was any power change?

Congrats and sounds like you figured out exactly what you want and what works for you.

So when you unplug the valves, do you put it in sport + setting and than unplug it??

I'm still waiting for someone to open up the exhaust canister and replace the proliferated piping in there with non proliferated pipes. This should give you an aggressive sound even in comfort mode as well.

I really feel like this S55 sounds the same no matter the exhaust option. It's unique to me...not bad, not good..

Akra is horrible especially for the price.

Wonder if catless DP will leave black bumper soot as well.

Sorry, but to me it sounds like this at low RPMs (fast forward to 0:34):

Also, the 1-2 shift sounds significantly slower than I expected, even at seemingly full throttle. Is the car in comfort mode or something perhaps? I expected the DCT to shift a lot faster.

Either way, thanks for trying out all these different setups and posting video!

Yeah its horrible in the same way a Ferrari 458 sounds horrible. Its hands down the best sound for this car so far, until We see more of that straight pipe setup. But like I said you gotta pay to play...

My 335's cat-back was 2500

My M6's turbo back was 6000

I dont find it unreasonable that the m3/4's is right in the middle, thats the game.

DCT shifts amazingly fast in mode 3.
But shift speed also varies depending on throttle application, rev range, and etc.
For this video, I ran the car in mdm mode with dct shift mode at 3.
Acceleration starting at 3:00 mark is done at full throttle application shifting around 7k rpm. Previous accelerations were not done @ full throttle.
