Search for the rotor heat shield issue. A few light presses on mine dislodged a small rock today and no more noise.

I've said it way earlier in the thread, but this thread is DEEP AS F*** now. If any of you switch wheels/tires yourselves it is very easy to bend the absolutely be-jesus out of the shields yourself in a perfectly safe and non-efficacy effecting manner. They are very pliable, and you can give them a solid 2 inches of distance from the rotor all around.
Since doing this I have only once heard a piece of gravel ping off the shield in 2 years. Nothing has gotten stuck whatsoever. To anyone talking about rear-diffs and the sound in question, it is completely unrelated. The shields are all P('s)OS, and while the diff can fail it doesn't make a sound like a robot getting raped by a dying mechanical crane.

Dropped her off Monday, they called me today to say they couldn't replicate the noise (probably beat the shit out of my car in the process). I told them to look at the shields. I'll find out more tomorrow.

Mine is booked in for tomorrow. Had a 30 mile drive & it's still there. First of all, they said just drive it around & it will work itself loose! The garage has ordered a replacement set of heat shields, as there is a known issue. Mine was built sept 16 which should have had the new shields to reduce the likelihood of this happening. Will see how I get on.
New shields are on order 10 - 15 days delivery. Was a stone which had been removed. The new shields should offer greater coverage & reduce the likelihood of a stone / pebble getting stuck. |

I told them to look at the brake shields, they call me and say they can't replicate the noise. I said, did you check the brake shields? No, we'll check them tomorrow. Called me today, of course there's a Service Bulletin on the brake shields. Three weeks to get the parts from Germany. I go to pick it up, they put 20 miles on it, and left me with practically no gas.

It's annoying that I had to tell them what to look for, then they ignored what I said. Then I had to tell them to look, again, after they had already, most likely had a nice joyride in my car.

Don't bother with BMW service over this - Seriously just bend the shields yourself and call it a day. Way less hassle and 100% effective. Rubber gloves -> press on shields all around the hub -> profit.

There's a replacement available, that they'll install, for free, why would we NOT take advantage of that?

I think what Brian is trying to say is that the fix doesn't necessarily work. So if your wasting your time don't bother, just push the shield back until the little bugger falls out. The fix only makes the pebble shoot out faster from being lodged in there. You still get the noise just a shorter noise.

In addition to getting trunk open by itself while I was driving today I also got this awful screeching of a rock/pebble stuck against the brake guard sound from right rear. Stopped, checked, saw NOTHING. Backed up, drove again and it continued. Then sound changed like it was getting dislodged. Then silence. I had just driven through a patch gravel before. The whole episode lasted about 300 yards. Was worried shatless ($$$$ I have CCBs). Came home, checked again, saw nothing. Searched and found this post. Not as worried as before but this is clearly a design problem. But heres the question. If the guard is stationary the rubbing has to be between the pebble and the inside of the ROTOR. Whats the likelihood of unseen damage to rotor?

Tire grinding noise with little rocks?
Anyone else have had a problem with getting small little pebbles stuck inside their brakes/wheels? Not sure where it's getting stuck exactly. All I know it is loud and sounds like it's scratching against metal. I have to often pull into a car wash area, hose down the wheels, and it seems like that fixes the issue.
Wondering if someone else has also experienced that. I have the 666's . |

Yes, common problem...it is from rocks getting stuck between the rotors and the metal plate...I just slightly bent the metal plate to allow for more room, and the problem is gone.

Yes this option has worked for me. It happened a few times but since bending the metal with my hands I've had no issues. It did sound horrible at the time. Clearly a design flaw.
