Is the rear diff problem fixed for MY2017?

Guys and gals in the 2017 M3/M4, are the rear diffs still being a problem, or has the problem gone away?

What do you mean about cranking noise? How many miles on yours?

Probably a rock stuck between the rotor and heat shield.

There was never a rear differential problem on these cars. You probably got rocks stuck behind brake shields which is easily remedied by banging them around lightly with a handle end of a longer screw driver.

If you search for the lengthy threads on this problem from last year you will learn that there was a manufacturing problem that affected a small percentage of vehicles manufactured within a fairly short time period in late May, IIRC. My M4 was manufactured in April and was not subject to the recall. I also have 3 friends with M3/M4s and a bunch of friends with M2s that were manufactured in early May and were not subject to the recall.

The remedy was to replace the rear differential and mounting bolts. The problem has long been rectified for cars manufactured since June 2016. My dates may be off somewhat but I'll let you do the research.

Exactly. Just look in the forums. This issue has all ready been exhausted enough. Short answer is no it's no longer a problem.

The tin can noise is not a diff. Problem. All m4's are subject to catching small rocks in between the rotors and the dust? guards... can't think of a better name for it. You can push the guard back a little bit to avoid this problem.

Yup, agree. When I was in the shop last month getting my winter wheels installed they mentioned a TID had been released along with a re-engineered heat shield to address the rock issue.

I may get them to swap them out when I do the change back to summers in the spring. I haven't really had a problem with rocks, either with the ZCP 20's or the 437M's (winters) so far. I guess time will tell.

Cheers,

I have a '17 - Bought in October. Yesterday i got the cranking/tin can noise. I guess mine wasn't manufactured after June 2016?

MY17 vehicles were impacted too, I know cause my M4 was held up in Germany for weeks.

I don't have the exact dates but it was an issue for vehicles produced between May and early July. This means even some early MY17 vehicles needed their rear diff replaced.

If you search in the forum or google there is a list with affected VIN's. If your car rolled off the production line anytime after mid-July you're prob safe.

You can also enter your VIN in some of the online VIN decoders to find out what exact date your vehicle finished production.

You apparently failed to understand that there are two problems being discussed in this thread, the rear differential problem and the rear brake backing plate problem. The date range that was given was for the rear differential problem, not the rear brake backing plate problem. They are not related in any way, except for the possible description of the sound.

The "tin can noise" is a symptom of a stone/stones betting caught between the backing plate and the back of the rotor. I don't know about a "cranking" noise. Within a few days of doing Euro Delivery on my M4, I picked up a stone/stones on a windy, twisty road in the Italian Dolomites and it sounded like I was dragging a string of tin cans behind my car. It apparently fell out when I stopped. When the car was redelivered, I bent back the backing plates slightly and I haven't had a problem since.
