There is also some bare metal near the positive terminals where strut brace anchors. Worked well for me.

I'm going to be storing my car for more than 3 months over the summer and I'm having a hard time finding a car storage unit in my area with an electric outlet access to connect a battery charger.

I was thinking my best option might just be to disconnect the battery terminal. I know with Lead Acid batteries that worked perfectly fine, but I'm not sure if with Lithium batteries it will be different. Any thoughts?

You mean Lead Acid, not Alkaline batteries.

Would think 3 months is fine if the battery is disconnected.
It will naturally discharge slowly, but over much much longer than 3 months if disconnected

Why cant you just connect it to the positive and negative directly to the battery with the eyelet terminals this way you can technically leave the eyelet terminals there so when storing you can just plug the tender to it. The trunk will close this way u don't have to have the hood open.

You can connect it in the trunk, but you must not connect it to the battery negative terminal. You can get errors with the Intelligent battery sensor that way.

You must connect the negative via the body.
This is fully explained in the manual if you buy the BMW branded CTEK charger from a dealer.

With the trunk open you will also have the trunk light burning for some time.
You also dont have to leave the hood fully up all the time if you place the clamps and cables correctly

I left my car sitting for 30 days straight - started right up and ran fine.

There appears no issues with battery drain while sitting for this period of time.

I wonder how long our cars can sit without significant (non-recoverable) drain on the battery?

Thank you for the photo of where to plug the negative cable.

Most cars wake up and do things, so if I don't drive a car for 3+ days, I am used to plugging them in. I'm glad I checked though as I hadn't known about the Lithium Ion battery. I'm still hacking my way through the long boring manual...

Good catch, and thanks for the info.

It seems like I will be just doing that. I'll report back and hopefully wont need to pay $1000+ for a new battery.

I've been using the bolt next to the positive terminal (part of the strut brace) and have had no problems getting the CTEK Lithium to work properly on my car.

Do you connect CTEC Lithium XS charger direct with battery or with plus and minus poles under the hood?

It is normal for the charger to get quite hot when charging.

Wow, learned something today. I used my motorcycle optimate 4 charger when I was coding the other day. Didn't cause any issues but def won't risk it in the future. I'll pick up the ctek for sure.

Well, as of today, my ctek charger is going on for 7 months.

Hopefully when I get back I'll have good things to report.

direct from CTEK:

"Yes, your charger can get quite warm during Stage 2 bulk charging. It has a safety thermal cutout switch set at 140°F. You should see it cool down after it reaches Stage 3, and be nearly cold by Stage 7. If you see that it is staying in Stage 2 (after moving from Stage 1) for much longer than 10 hours, there may be an issue with the charger or battery."

Why does it matter if the ground is connected to the battery or the body? Modern cars are common ground so the entire body is connected to the negative terminal through a ground strap so I don't see how this would have an impact.

Because of the intelligent battery system. Our cars have a adaptive charging/ monitoring system to extend battery life. It does make a difference and WILL cause problems just ground to the body.
