0-30 or 0-40 oil, which one?
So, it seems like it should be 0-40w now? Here s why I'm asking. I'm going to do intermediate oil changes myself at 5k. I just took my car for 1200 service and they put 0-30 in. They told me this is oil they stock and use (and other dealers in midwest)
So, should I put 0-40 myself or stick to 0-30 dealer uses? Because if we going to change oil - it will be alternating 5k-0-40 10k-0-30 15k-0-40 |

As lifted from the 2016 F80 M3 Owners manual.
Viscosity grades for engine oils When selecting an engine oil, ensure that the engine oil belongs to the viscosity grade SAE 0W-40, or malfunctions or engine damage may occur. As an alternative, you can also use motor oils with a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30. |

Any of those grades are fine as long as the oil spec meets Bmw LL-01 certification. The owners manual is a little confusing, first saying to use 0w40 or 0w30, but then it more broadly states that any LL-01 oil will do. LL-01 oils come in viscosities of 0w30, 5w30, 0w40, and 5w40 (not sure if any other weights are in this class).
In reality, either 0w30, 5w30, or 0w40 will work just fine in any climate. |

This is copied directly from the F80 owners manual on BMWUSA.com: "When selecting an engine oil, ensure that the engine oil belongs to the viscosity grade SAE 0W-40, or malfunctions or engine dam‐ age may occur. As an alternative, you can also use motor oils with a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30." Also there is new BMW/Shell ///M Twinpower turbo 0W-40 oil specific for ///M twinpower turbo cars. So yea, they definitely recommend 0W-40 for these cars.

I have a 2015 model - where the owners manual originally included 5W30. I always keep an extra quart in the car (have never needed it on the F80) - and have a bottle of 5W30.
If dealer uses 0W30 or 0W40 on next oil change - and I need to add a quart of oil - any harm in mixing one quart of 5W30 with the remaining quarts of 0W30 or 0W40? |

I bought an oil change kit for my M4 from getbmwparts.com (Tischer BMW) a week or so ago and it arrived today There were 7 qts. of Original BMW Engine Oil Twin Power Turbo SAE 5W-30. On the back it indicates that it's Longlife-01 (LL-01). I expected 0W-30 or 0W-40, as the manual specified 0W-40, or 0W-30 as an alternative, and either Longlife-01 or Longlife-01 FE. I thought that the bottle appeared similar so I compared it to the oil I have on the shelf for my wife's 2011 335is Coupe and it was identical, right down to the exact part number!
In searching for BMW oil recommendations I came across this BMW page: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...ord=motorenoel. It lists several different BMW oils with different viscosities and weights, but it appears that the M4 can use any of the following BMW oils:
I'd prefer the "M" 0W-40 oil so I checked around and on their website ECS Tuning offers the BMW M Twin Power Turbo 0W-40 oil in their oil change kit, although it's $94.31 with free shipping compared to the getbmwparts.com price of $79.95 with free shipping but a "handling" fee of $2.95. ECS Tuning also includes a new oil pan plug, which isn't really necessary since the post 9/2014 models have a reusable drain plug. I've decided to just keep the 5W-30 oil for a future oil change for my wife's car and I've ordered the oil change kit from ECS Tuning which includes the "M" 0W-40 oil. So if you want the 0W-40 "M" oil, you can order it from ECS Tuning. UPDATE: I sent an e-mail to getbmwparts.com and they indicated that the kit I ordered was an outdated kit and this has since been corrected. They now have the option to order either the 5W-30 oil or the 0W-40 "M" oil (the 0W-40 oil is more expensive) at this link: https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462. They offered to swap the oil, or if I chose to keep it for my wife's car, to order the 0W-40 oil separately at this link: https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462.
