And it would be nice to see how the M4 competes against other rivals to the RS5 ie. e92 M3, 1series M, C63 507(which I'm sure it'll still be faster than all of these). Auto Express already preferred the E92 M3 to the RS5 5 years ago. Telling us the M4 is faster than a RS5 is a no-brainer - it better be. At this point it just seems more like an ego stroking comparison than anything else. Of course, when the M4 loses to newer rivals like the C7, the 911, the Jaguar F-Type, suddenly everyone on here wants to claim it's not a fair fight. I will say the video itself of the M4 drifting is a very nice. And that's one of the main reasons why I wanted the M4 because of its ability to powerslide.
The C7, 911, and F-type are basically pure sports cars, hence why some find the comparison to be unfair. The M4 is probably slightly slower than the C7 and 911, while being faster than the V6 F-type. When the other cars are 500 lbs lighter it's hard to beat them on a track. The clear rivals to the M3/4 are the other cars in it's class, namely the C63 and RS5 (and ATS-V when it comes out).

Also, since the new C63 is coming out soon and the new RS5 is still a ways out, it would make sense to wait for the new merc for comparisons while battling the RS5 now.

Sounds Amazing! Now there's a man who's hearing what I've been hearing with all the on-board footage of the car! Love it!!!

Don't really see a point because we already know that the M3/M4 is an improvement over the E92 so it would be nothing more than to see both cars side/side...which I guess would still be cool.

Another "vs" battle to compare times.

Audi R8 V8 vs Porsche 911 4S

Audi R8 V8- 1:12.0
911 4S - 1:11.8

Agree the M3 is fast but the Turbo S and GTR had damp conditions on their laps so time comparison is probably not fair.

Well

Daily driving the car, it is Fast

I just drove a 991 GT3 and I felt it was Flat in terms of torque. Sounds amazing but the M3 was faster to me.

Hmmm, I thought GT3 was and outright beast when I watch Harris's review of it.
Maybe you need to check your human speed sensors.

I'm an above averaging commuting driver, but it looks like it'll be a good idea for me to sign up for performance driving school when I get the M4 in. Goood reality check for me! I don't intend to go tracking that often, but I think in cases when I might "accidentally" drift, at least I'll know what to do.

if you drift on public roads without training/track experience, you're goonnna have a bad time.

happens all the time, AWD traction or not.

This I the funniest thing I've read in a while. The M3/4 is not only slower, but isn't even approaching half the performance car that is a GT3 I don't care if you're talking 996 GT3.

The weight difference is large so the lap times should not be a surprise

Unfair comparisons of an aging Audi RS5 platform vs. the newest M4 BMW platform will yield these kinds of results. Recall that the RS4 was already slower than the e92 M3.

My recollection is also that even an x5M beat an RS4 in a track state side on a video I saw online some time back. I do not recall the video link but the x5M was faster!

In any case, the E92 platform vs. the M4 platform should be the objective comparison. This would demonstrate the progress in evolution of e92 --> F82. How much faster? Don't just take BMW's words... try it yourself.

A more worthwhile comparison would be to show how far the M4 is to a GT3 or a 911 Turbo. On a track, how much time lapse between the Porsche GT3 or a turbo winning vs. the M4 catching up. And of course, another comparison would be to show what the M4 can do with dedicated slicks. After all, the car is touted as a track car, and with some learning of the car and minor acceptance of defeat, the M4 should come in not far behind... and the question is how far behind? And if the difference is not that bad, then if you are a good driver you may take on a race with one of these guys at a local track and see how you do.

Comparing to other coupes and other sedans like the e63 family etc... is an old story, just like the RS5 comparison. The merc is softer and more focused on luxury.

Hahaa

Audi lostπŸ’£ The new Mercs are crap too. Feel free to get off the 8 and onto the turbo 6 Mercedes. BMW is maintaining power while improving MPG. Audi and Merc are exploiting the same tired V8 technology. Where will they both be in 4 years if they don't re-engineer their drive trains?.....irrelevant, that's where!

Agree what your saying the M4 is not as fast as those cars and other tracks can show a bigger time difference between them.
But i just want to point out that even though it was damp for the 991 Turbo S and GTR and it is certainly no benefit for them in that condition but those cars also have very good AWD systems.
So i dont think those cars have as much disadvantage in the damp as RWD or FWD cars would have.
What i mean by that is that the 911 and GTR not necessarily would be so much quicker around the track in dry conditions vs a RWD or FWD car in damp vs dry therefore the M4 time is impressive.

Also one other thing ,for me just because one car is faster than another does not mean that it is a better car there is so much more to a car than that.
It just fun to compare and discuss cars sometimes.

this is pointless. of course the bimmer is obviously faster -no 4wd system to carry - and more entertaining. despite beeing similar and competitor car's they are built for 2 very different purposes. what amazes me is how good the audi looks despite its age and the interior - the dash dials are great imo - and only makes me wonder what the next gen is going to look like. I tested the M4 yesterday. great but not epic like the csl or the V10. it lacks spark. Not to worry. bmw will give it in the form of a 7 - 10k competion package in x months time. The nose still needs to loose 40kg - front engined of course - and if the windows are up it still feels a bit sedated. I think this is more a E39 M5 gone mental rather than a e46 CSL reincarnation- Now if they wanted to make this vid interesting bring in the cheaper cayman gts. Let the games begin

The only people who want to read those articles (since the outcomes are easy to surmise) are the people still holding onto the previous model, telling themselves that the "bespoke engine" is "the last true M." I don't see why this is somehow more objective than a car that is obviously cross-shopped despite being a few years since introduction. Plus, we've already seen a comparison where the BMW didn't win (vs old C63, Steve Sutcliffe). Guess that's invalid too, because it's old.

The cars people cross-shop with the F80/2 seem to be the RS5, CTS/ATS-V, M5, M235, 911, F-type and C7. These are the comparisons we'll read.

Pretty good result from the M4.
After tracking the M4 and the RS5 for 2 days, I can tell you that anybody spending that much money on this Audi is INSANE. Sorry but for th money, you can't beat the new M3 and M4. PERIOD!
