F80 M3 and F82 M4 Dyno and Weight: Comparison Time

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
A week after launch, M3/M4s are starting to hit the streets!

As a followup to our F80 M3 Dyno and Weight, we had an opportunity to once again weigh another M3 for comparison. Our racecar building friends over at Racewerkz Engineering swung by our shop yesterday with their new Mineral White F80 M3 & Alpine White F82 M4. Naturally, the first order of business was to see how the M4 would do on our in-house Dynojet dyno.

Dyno Testing
Just like the Yas Marina Blue M3 we dynoed last week, this Alpine White M4 further proved that BMW has seriously underrated the F8X's horsepower claims. Even on a relatively hot and humid day for SoCal, the M4 recorded a very impressive 421whp and 410wtq with STD correction.

A different approach and part of data collecting, we did some endurance testing on the dyno. Endurance testing is a quick 5-run burst with no time to cool down. The purpose of this is to see how the vehicle reacts to heatsoaking:

We didn't get a chance to dyno the M3, only because the motor was not yet broken-in.

M3/M4 Weigh-In
Note that both cars are identical build with the exception of [02NK M Carbon Ceramic Brakes] that were equipped on the M3. M4 was standard.

2015 Mineral White M3 Specs
0ZDB Driver Assistance Plus
0ZEC Executive Package
0ZLP Lighting Package
02MK M Double-clutch Transmission (DCT)
02NK M Carbon Ceramic Brakes
02VF Adaptive M Suspension
02VZ 19" Black Wheel 437 M Mix Tire
Fuel: Empty (no driver)
Weight: 3562lb

2015 Alpine White M4 Specs
0ZDB Driver Assistance Plus
0ZEC Executive Package
0ZLP Lighting Package
02MK M Double-clutch Transmission (DCT)
02VF Adaptive M Suspension
02VZ 19" Black Wheel 437 M Mix Tire
Fuel: 1/2 Tank (no driver)
Weight: 3579lb

The carbon ceramic brake optioned M3 weighed in at 3562lbs, while the M4 was only 17lbs heavier.

Modifications
It was then time for some modifications. While the M4 chose to remain stock for now, we had the opportunity to install Macht Schnell spacers on the M3

- Macht Schnell Competition Wheel Spacer Kit - 12mm (front)
- Macht Schnell Competition Wheel Spacer Kit - 15mm (rear)
- Macht Schnell 90mm Competition Stud Conversion Kit

The spacers were just enough to give the M3 a proper stance, while the studs allow for quicker and easier wheel changes when it hits the track.

As always, we took a bunch more photos to show you nearly every step of the process.

F80 M3 Macht Schnell Spacer & Stud (new stance)

Special thanks to Racewerkz for taking the time to participate!

Yessss! New info! The M3 had no fuel, so the weight between these two cars is about the same.

Nice weight on the M3. So including carbon ceramics and no fuel, 3,562 pounds huh?

Those options probably add a solid 150-180 pounds over base (DCT, Adaptive, Leather, Exec Package, Lighting Package, Drivers assist package).

So I'm looking at a U.S. spec M3 (sedan) with a mostly empty fuel tank and probably an option free weight south of 3400 pounds.

That's just my guess, but that's pretty nice.

A dry M4 with carbon ceramics and no other options, and maybe euro-spec (i.e. manual seats) and without a owners manual and tire inflating kit or tool kit is probably right around 3300 pounds then

Lol, that's the combo!!!

I am still shocked at how much BMW underrated their engine.

I agree that the silver looks better. I didn't care for the black option when I saw it in person.

Thanks again for sharing this stuff

IMO, the 12mm/15mm setup shown here looks much better balanced than the 20mm/20mm on the YMB M3 in the other thread.

So the difference between M3 and M4 seems to be in the neighborhhod of 50lb as advertised by BMW at launch (+17lb difference here -50lb ½ tank of fuel -15lb CCB = -48lb)

Seen both in the metal and I'd have to disagree with you on that one! MW looks almost like a dirty white in some lighting- AW looks brighter. Each to their own.

To each their own. I have seen both in the metal too, side by side, and it was a clear cut choice.

Damn, you probably like Coke over Pepsi don't you?
