D3 DOMINATED M3 in that review.

he missed a big point. d3 would've been great if based on m sport line. it just looks like a autozone parts job on the exterior. just looks horrible.

Agreed. Never liked his way of reviewing cars either.

I just wish the D3 didn't look so tame/lame. They are both fast, one is really sporty and the other is more lux... simple enough.

Pretty fair review I'd say (not that I've driven a D3). But personally, as most of you have read, I LIKE the sound of the S55. And this is coming from an S65 owner.

Also, BMW need to bring a 335d or 535d Touring in the US. I'd get one of those and drive it till the wheels fall off.

Odd review, really two different cars.

For what sutcliffe seemed to value, the alpina is good.

To me, a heavyish calm and stoic automatic sedan that looks like a base model 335 is not something that would interest me

I like the rawness and aggression of the m3. Sports car soul in a practical sedan body.

To each their own though

Sutcliff really comes across as biased when reviewing the M3 (seen two now). Def not a fan.

Perhaps the D3 really is that good. Had a hard time believing it brakes better and is faster through the course. But was he really complaining that the M3 was louder and more unrefined than a luxury Alpina?

The fact is this- out of all the reviews I've read and watched Sutcliffe is the only one who really does not like this car .
I believe someone at M division must have gone round to his house, shagged his wife and then eaten his dog the day before this car was launched......

I don't think he's an M3 hater...just has different expectations for it.

He does seem to have it out for the M3. I'm betting if he used launch control the acceleration test would have been a lot different and if he used MDM the track times would have been a lot different. I almost feel like he deliberately set the tests up to disadvantage the M3 and the tools it comes with.

Imagine if he put the old M3 up against the D3. Wonder how he would have reviewed it.

Something tells me he likes the "sounds" of the loud v8. I saw his 507 vs. M review earlier.

It does seem that way. I'm sure the Alpina is a fantastic car that does a lot of things better than the M3 ( fuel efficiency , comfort etc) while still offering awesome performance but I will be utterly amazed if it starts lapping circuits faster than the new M3. In fact I will state now that the only test in which it out performs an M3 on a track is this one in the hands of Sutcliffe.
I also believe that straight line speed will be in favour of the M3 by a decent margin from a roll or dig with M3 using LC.

FWIW, at 1:15 in the video you can clearly see that LC is being used on the Alpina, but not the M3.

The Alpina also has a lot less fuel in the tank than the M3.

Both beautiful cars but for different people. I never asked me if I wanted an Alpina instead of my F80.

You sir are correct. Busted Sutcliffe.

1. Why are they testing the Alpina on almost zero fuel? M3 has half a tank so 30 kg right there.

2. Launch control used on Alpina but not the M3- after he stated ' they just turned off DSC and mashed the gas' hmmmm
3. M3 set to Efficient engine response not Sport +......why is that?

Could he have disadvantaged the M3 anymore to get the result he wanted? Very poor Sutcliffe.

A couple of seconds later the M3 has clawed back that disadvantage and is travelling faster than the D3 but that poor start is hard to claw back in such a short race.......
