Geneva 2015: BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car with water injection system

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Geneva 2015: BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car with water injection system

COMMENTS

The 2015 season marks the 17th season of BMW M as "Official Car of MotoGP" and the BMW M4 [see Official Thread] will be serving as the safety car. This year's safety car is fitted with a full array of M Performance Parts, and also features some new technology under the hood -- a water injection system.

The water injection system helps to lower temperatures in the combustion chamber, which helps prevent uncontrolled combustion (knock) and a loss in performance. In BMW's words: cooler supercharged air reduces the engine's tendency to knock, making it possible to bring the point of ignition forward and thus closer to the optimum value. This makes the combustion process more effective, whilst at the same time reducing the combustion temperature. On the other hand, cool air has a higher density which increases the oxygen content in the combustion chamber. This results in a higher mean pressure during the combustion process and in turn optimises performance and torque. Finally, the effective internal cooling of the combustion chamber reduces the thermal strain on numerous performance-related components. This not only prevents damage to pistons, exhaust valves and catalytic converters, but also reduces the strain on the turbocharger, which is subjected to lower exhaust temperatures.

The lower process temperatures also reduce the formation of hazardous substances, in particular nitrogen oxide (NOX). Water injection consequently dramatically improves the effectiveness of the engine.

BMW M has said that it will begin production of a model featuring water injection in the near future.

So there won't be any M3 or (normal) M4 displayed in Geneva? I was hoping to see a color I have not seen on the M3/4 in person yet (I still have time to change my order and I was considering SS and SO, but not a single dealer in my area has one in these colors).

I hope this means this will be available from BMW in the next few months. If the dealer installs and warranties it, I'm in.

Is this the first application of water injection at BMW? I remember another thread on this a week or two back.

Lol at that wishful thinking. This tech will debut on the gts and maybe make its way in the regular M3/4's of the next generation (or F8x LCI comp pack?). A knowledgable tech would be able to retrofit this if you can get your hands on it that is.

As for dealer installs under warranty. Not happening. Kind of like a e92 owner asking for GTS pistons and rear subframe from dealer.

The question is... does it have a better underbody protection for the oil radiator? If so this part becomes top 1 mod I guess.

I wonder what tire sizes are used on this car.

They seem wider than the stock 255/275 /35R19.

Question

The M graphic styling is it painted or 3M ControlTAC, or som sort of body wrap material. Or is it just so easy that it is the old white car with an elaborate full body wrap with the M swoshes integrated in the full wrap so to speak.
I am planning to do this styling this for my own M4. Now I have the M performance stripes You can get at Your dealer.

Do they run Bridgestones, Michelin is the OEM but the cars I drove at the M drivers course in Germany all cars had Bridgestone because they where a lot cheaper. The ran out a set of tires in 2 days.

Saab had aftermarket water injection kits fot the 99 Turbo and early 900 Turbo 78-81. Added another 20 bhp! You got an "S" to put on the rear as well!

All of BMW's CCBs are drilled, no? So are the PCCBs on Porsches. Off the top of my head I can't think of CCBs that aren't drilled, actually.
