-SCANS- Car UK M4 VS C63 AMG

Second comparo, this time in CAR UK April 2015 edition. This time the Merc wins. Note that the M4 not a press Car but a dealer's card with non-standard tires...

Iffy brakes and the wrong tires? Seriously... Coin up for some proper tires and address the brakes.

EDIT: Finished the read... My point still stands, and they should have at least put some proper rubber on.

Thanks Paul, for the interesting article.

I don't read it (last para of the articel) as the Merc winning though, depending on one's preferences.

Thanks for the post OP. This was a well written article.

Kudos to Mercedes for taking the bland, unremarkable last gen C63 and turning it into this beast. It's a great car, that finally looks as great as it drives.

Thanks. Both 5 star ratings, impressive. Audi has its work cut out.

I think it's more obvious than ever that these cars are really focused towards different people.

Bmw described as "raw, loud, rough, old school" while merc "comfortable, reassuring, softer, more laid back"

Just depends what you are looking for. 5 star reviews suggest they think both are top cars in their specific niche

Like I had mentioned in the other thread, it is certainly a great time to be in the market/own one of these bad boys.

I'm certainly thankful that I own a car in this segment.

Where are you on the interiors? I really prefer the C63 over the M cars. Outside of the too-thick nav screen border I think it looks just about perfect. Will be interesting to see how it holds out with all the shiny surfaces and metallic bits.

Only 40kg difference stated here where the other article put the C63 at 200kg more. Interesting.

I know youre not asking me but....

I like the M better except the seats. The circle air vents in the C63 remind me of a Ford truck...

For me, the styling of the merc doesn't jive well inside or out. Too much roundness, too much chrome, too much going on. Just my taste.

I like the simpler interior in the Bmw, which is as expensive looking as I need an interior to be.

One place the merc wins for me is the performance seats. I hate that Bmw doesn't offer a true performance seat as an option.

Other than that, I really like the engine in the merc. The rest is a let down to me personally in terms of aesthetics and overall nature of the car. That's more a function of personal taste than anything else

RS5/ATS-V better bring it with this segment competition.

I think flat-bottomed wheels are gimmicky in general but like the look of this one on the Merc. Tits the center console that really grabs my attention. The sweeping flow from top to bottom just looks right. I'd have a hard time describing what the M interiors were shooting for, but can tell you pretty clearly what Mercedes was trying to do.

Steering wheel: BMW
Nav Screen integration: BMW
iDrive usability: BMW
Everything else: Mercedes

Just my opinion. I can be swayed.

As I've said before, I like the MB for sure... excited to see the coupe as I don't like the look of the sedan in the rear at all. The Achilles Heel is still the MCT transmission and it has been noted to be improved but still a step behind. Not relevant in the least for street driving but very relevant, IMO, for those spending time at the track.

This review was well written but it surprises me that they didn't comment more on the non-OEM tires and worn brakes. That seems a bit unfair because as most would know, tires play a very big role in how a car feels, stability and grip. Regardless, good review.

Yes, they better...

Speaking of which, I feel like the ATS-V is due... I guess spring? Isn't that like now?

I had a flat-bottom in my 2006 GLI and my two Golf Rs... It was really cool at the time, and I've always like the way Audi executed it, but I just don't really care for it anymore. I could care less if it has one, or not.

We're basically the opposite on the dash. I don't really like the dash at all, but I do like that open pore wood trim and the optional seats, but don't like the standard seats at all. I like the full leather in the F8X over the MB-tex dash, but if I was forced to pick between MB-Tex and the standard F8X dash, I'd probably take the C63. I like the "sporty", yet subtle appearance of the F8X interior better. I could do without all the aluminum/chrome in the C63.

Thankfully there are options available to us.

A lot of the options seem to cancel each other out, and it seems to boil down to what you prefer, or can live with.

I really don't like the Nav screen in the Merc. They could have done it better. The rest of the car looks really good. The biggest problem is that here in Belgium the C63 is bought (sometimes) from (lets say, the wrong kind of people). At least the last model was.

So the C63 has more power and more grip, is more confortable and more confidence inspirering while being just as fun, sounds miles better, without any of that synthesized sound BS, and has more luxurious interior with nicer seats. Seems like the only thing missing is a sportier rear end, hopefully the coupe will deliver!!

Ben Barry in the excerpt said the M3 had better grip. The C63 also has understeer, body roll, and inferior handling but I suppose those are traits you enjoy.

I find it hilarious the amount of time you spend on here talking about you car you dislike and never plan on getting.

Has better seats if you pay for them.

Sound isn't synthesized.

This statement really is a sticking point for me: "........And because it's transmission - a blend of wet takeoff clutch and 7-speed automatic-does not shift as energetically as the M3's 7-speed DCT."
Every single car I've ever driven that purports a "speedy shifting" automatic transmission eventually leads me to a frustrating experience as the tranny is unresponsive to downshift/upshift exactly when I need it too. This car also mounts the gear selector on the stalk, from diving the M3 around town in manual mode I find it a must to use the gear shifter to upshift while in the middle of a turn because the paddles are upside down somewhere. This car seems like it would make this situation a huge pain in the ass, or maybe not, we'll see.

Great review and the C63 is starting to look better seeing it in action from different angles.
This review makes it clear that the vehicles have and are for different personalities. The M3 is more raw and sporty while the C63 is more GT and elegant. My personality has always been for the more aggressive and precise machine, I value athleticism and character. I'm getting the impression the C63 is great for long trips and cruising to the country club in a nice suit, it has the muscle but is a lover not a fighter, those are just beach muscles.

Both great cars, I have to admit that I am finding the grown up look of the C63 pleasantly appealing, nothing like hopping out of freshly detailed luxurious automobile in flip flops, old jeans, a t-shirt and ball cap, the contrast throws the uppity folk for a loop.

I sometimes wait for others to quote him only to write something about what he said, but never see his response back. It's pretty funny to me.
