Video Comparison: 2015 vs. 2016 M3 / M4 Exhaust

BIMMERPOST

Updated with results:

OK folks, so I have allowed enough time for everyone to get on this morning, even the west coasters.

Some initial comments. I was wrong and they absolutely sound different on the video. In real life we had it mixed results. The first time we did this, phyek and I both felt they sounded the same, the second time around we both heard the difference. The acoustics were different in videos 1/2 vs Videos 3/4 and perhaps that made a difference and allowed for human error or human clarity. Funny enough I liked the 16 and he my 15.

RESULTS
So videos 1/3 were my 2015 F80 and videos 2/4 were the 2016 F82.

I don't know if the parts and systems between f80 and f82 are different, someone else will have to provide that info.

Thanks for everyone that voted and commented and for Mfanatik for being the somewhat biased neutral party.

Also, to try to answer some of the questions, even though they are in the thread -
  • The F80 has @1500 miles, the F82 about 900 miles
  • In all the videos the cars were warm (spirited runs) and in the second video the cars were running for a few minutes prior to testing.
  • Cold starts - we were not willing to sit around for 4 hours while the cars cooled down. You're on your own...

__________________________________________________ ___

So apologies for the poor camera work but this is about sound. I took video from 2 MW F8X, a 2015 and a 2016.

Tell me if they sound different and which one sounds better. I am going to try and take another set of videos tomorrow. It was damn hot outside and the exhaust heat did not help. Thanks to phyek for providing the 2016 M4.

I'll post what is what later in the week. Enjoy and again - sorry for the thumb.

Two more videos

Cars were running for about 3 minutes before testing, both cars were Sport+ and revved by the same person in the 4500-6500 range for each car.

- Video 1 and 3 are the same car
- Video 2 and 4 are the same car

Video 1 is noticeably better sounding, at least for me.

I hope the first video is a 2016(as I have one on order )

I have not listened to either one yet. But, looking at the tailpipes in the first frame I'm going to guess that is the 2015 due to the fact they look much dirtier.

I hope I just did not inject some bias!

1st bid is Def 16 model. My 16 m3 sounds similar but mine is slightly deaper. Most likely due to my car being newer and not broken in yet.

Very similar but 1st video sound like my 2015. When video 2 revs it sounds just a little less raspy. At idle they are both the same

Neither one sounded like they were cold starts which is the entire point of the thing.

Now that I have listened to them a few times I am voting for #1 as having a better sound than #2.

I will give you my completely unbiased opinion next week when I pickup my 2016 at the Welt that the 2016 exhaust sounds better

It's impossible to do cold start as I don't live with someone else that has a 2016 M. It takes hours for these cars to cool down. You gonna buy the drinks while we wait? It was not only about startup, as the comments have shown.

Keep chiming in guys.

As for the dirty exhaust - we both have had the cars for less than a month of use. Remember my was on a ship for 5 weeks, but good try...lol

The poll would have been easier to interpret with just 3 choices: "Both sound the same", "#1 sounds better" and "#2 sounds better". In any case, #1 sounds better to me too.

Do they sound different? kind of.. yes.
Do they sound different enough for it to be noticeable/a big deal? That's what is up for debate... imo no.

The second video is metallic and raspy sounding, much like the 2015 I test drove. The first is deeper, less "rough". They definitely sound different.

Not arguing with you. Just saying the majority (I'm pretty sure) are interested in whether BMW improved the cold start tincan lawnmower civic shitty shitpants sound.

Everything after cold start I'm reasonably not unhappy with. Louder, quieter, different, whatevs... I mean, the M engineer still needs his ass kicked and his hearing checked but it's not bad enough to cancel my order over.

For Christ's sake, it's been two hours since he posted this. While it is technically "later in the week", I doubt that's the intention.

They definitely sound different, and video 1 sounds better. But, my exhaust sounds pretty close to the first video and I have a '15 M3. I have the stock exhaust with Accel Junky valve mod. Strange!

I worked for a company that conducted annual 'employee engagement' surveys. They were administered by Gallup. OMG some of the questions were awful lol.

Do you have a best friend at work?

If video 1 is the 2015 people's heads are going to explode thanks for doing this... Hopefully this is conclusive enough that we don't need to run a full LA focus group

It sounds like the valves are closed in the second video while it is open in the first one.
