Also keep in mind that there are several variables that will affect how much stuff you get in the CC. Being tuned is only one of them....

30k mile oil change CC drain update....
Definitely more condensation this time compared to previous drains. If I had to guess, I would say approx 3-4 ounces or so (the bottle in the second pic is a 12 oz gatorade bottle). The amount of sludge was about the same as what I have seen in the past.

The amounts in all if these is not that much. All you are doing is taking out some oil/vapor that the engine would normally eat. Oil in the intake charge can promote detonation so getting it out is a good thing. The more boost etc that you run, the more you need it.

2018 M3 with 8000 miles. I Installed BMS Catch Can and drove about 1,500miles, then checked Catch Can. Surprisingly the catch can was 1/3 Full of Water with about half a teaspoon of oil.
I'm So glad I installed this!!! I do a lot of short city driving and my car is tuned as well.

Installed mine. The PCV was a bitch to get off. Looks like they newer MY have another plastic cover on the engine under the main one. And the hose was dry.
Anyone noticed a difference in sound from the motor after installing at idle? Strange that I heard something and when I pressed the clutch pedal only, the sound went away. Release the pedal and sound came back. I think it was only during cold start and not yet fully warmed up. I went to the dyno and didnt hear it again since i had first started the car. |

Ok fellas, I just received my Turner Motorsports Oil Catch Can. Here are a couple initial observations...
I'm going to do the install this weekend and will post my results in this thread like jmciver has been doing. On to the pictures. |

Looks nice. Too bad you need to cut off the stock PCV hose for the install, that could be a problem for some people. The hose clamps should not be necessary as well since it is a low pressure system. Also, installing the drain hose parts may not be that advantageous as I can see it getting clogged fairly easily over time. My experience thus far with my BMS OCC is that I get an oily sludge residue that builds up in the bottom of the can (in addition to some water/condensation) between draining intervals. When I check my OCC at my oil change intervals, after I drain it, I always wipe out the bottom of the can to remove that sludge.
Also, completely removing the can with the brace installed is not that hard. I can remove, empty, and re-install my OCC in less than 15 min now - the Turner one seems like it should be just as easy to remove for draining. I thought about adding a drain tube at a later date, but decided it was not worth it after seeing the sludge in the bottom of the OCC. But the Turner OCC looks like it should perform effectively and it is nice to see multiple, quality options available for the consumer. I have not posted an update as I have not seen anything too different than my previous drain intervals - I am at 45k+ miles now (just recently did my 45k mile oil and OCC service). I will say that the amount of condensation/water seems to be directly proportional to the ambient temps. My 40k mile oil change, which was during the summer, the OCC was dry. However, most of my oil changes during my ownership have occurred in the Fall, Winter and early Spring. I live in the mid-Atlantic area so we see all 4 seasons in this area. Those of you who live in consistently warmer climates may see different results - including less moisture in your OCC's.

That's the nice thing about the BMS OCC kit, it's fully plug and play so you don't need to cut or modify any of the factory PCV lines.

I'm gonna attempt to do the install today. I'm not too concerned about the stock pvc pipe as they are inexpensive to replace. That being said, it looks like the BMS one has a lot more room which makes emptying easier. I'll keep you guys updated.

As far as emptying the BMS, I don't see it being that easy without fully dismounting it again, which isn't a huge issue. But we shall see. |

I installed the Turner Oil Catch Can today. It took less than an hour to install and I imagine would be the same for anyone that is somewhat handy. The build quality of the Turner unit is top notch. The only note I have is that the return silicone pipe was a tad longer than I liked so I trimmed it. Better too long than too short though. I didn't install the evacuation spigot as it looks like it'd be easy to remove the can by just unbolting it. The instructions say that you need to trim the engine cover, I did not have to. There was plenty of space to avoid trimming it.
On to the pictures. Last edited by x.shell; 12-09-2019 at 12:41 PM.. |
