newbie learning how to detail
Hi guys I've been reading, learning and practicing how to detail my car properly from all the experts on m3post. I've been just using products form my local automobile store. Mostly megulars products. But now I rdy to buy the real deal stuff. I just wanted some advice. Like what machine orbital to buy. And what products I need to do a full detail. The two I see mentioned the most are cg and zaino stuff. Is that the way to go? Thanks for all your help this site is the best. Also wheres the best place to buy the stuff? off the websites?
Right now I wash use megulars shampoo followed by megulars clay then apply megulars tech wax by hand. Still a newb but ready to step my game up lebreeze I love my car

Try not to wash the car in circle motion, this will minimize swirl marks. Also try using 2 buckets, one to rinse your wash mitt.
Also you do not need to clay your car everytime you wash it, that's a little too extreme. www.zainobros.com is where I purchase zaino from.

PORTER CABLE is by far the best machine!

Buy 2 five-gallon paint buckets and 2 grit guards. Rinse w/ water in one, soap in the other. Great system to reduce damage to clear coat. I bought a shit load of Adam's detailing spray-mostly for bug removal after each summer night drive. I also bought P21S shampoo and wax....stuff is legit! I'm still VERY VERY confused about the right polish to use. I want non-abrasive HiGH quality stuff since the car is 3 months old and flawless.

Be prepared to be infected by the detailing disease. For starters, this is not going to be cheap. Like everyone else mentioned definitely purchase two buckets with grit guard; in addition to that, I like to rinse the mitt with a hose even before putting back into the "rinse" bucket, ensures the complete removal of debris. If you want to go a step further purchase a foam gun, I personally own a gilmour gun that attaches to the hose. I suggest you purchase two-three sheep skin mitts(one for hood, trunk and bumpers, another for roof and windows, and lastly the fenders and doors). For the wheel, I bought the EZ brush, swissvax wheel brush, and a mother's brush for the wheel well and tires. An essential equipment that should be in your arsenal is an abundance of microfiber cloths- you'll need the waffle weave for drying, the "all purpose" and an applicator. Now for the chemicals/products. I have used and love the Citrus Wash & Gloss from CG but found it to be a bit pricey. So I usually resort to turtle Wax Ice from Costco, although it doesn't foam as well. For the wheels, I use P21S's gel wheel. It is safe for all wheel surfaces and works well. And for the engine compartment I use P21S's TAW. If the grease and oil is really stubborn I use CG's grime reaper, I like the 7:1 ratio opposed to the 5:1. As for the clay, I use sonus's lube and green clay and Magic Clay's red. And as for the polisher, since you're new either get the PC or UDM. For the polishes I don't really like zainos. I use Menzerna P083 and P0106FA, though it can get dusty at times. And for the sealant get CG's Jetseal~usually 2 layers topped off with CG's 50/50. And finally the windows and tires, use Stoner for window and i use mother's tire shine; all depends on preference and price. I bought most of my equipment/products through Detailedimage.com, Amazon and Costco/Pepboys(mother's, turtle wax)

since there are already some great replies as to what detailing products you should use I am only going to recommend an orbital polisher to you. If you can get the Flex Orbital, more expensive than the Porter Cable, but definitely worth it...
http://www.properautocare.com/flxcdupo.html We recently did a friends Porsche 911, a black one with lots of swirls, and the Porter Cable did nothing when using a yellow 6" pad with Menz IP, we switched to the Flex on a less aggressive 6" orange pad with Menz IP and voila the swirls disappeared. The Porter Cable would have probably corrected the swirls too, however we would have needed a 4" pad and much more time...Another big drawback of the Porter is that it vibrates like hell and your arm will get numb...

If you clay every time you wash you are removing a good chunk of your wax and sealant every time.

Someone should setup a car detail seminar. I for one would pay a couple of hundred to learn all of this first hand.
Is there a way to find a local detailer that uses the right product and technique?
