1200 mile service @ 766 miles

Hey guys, at around 760 miles my service light came on and the Idrive said it needed an oil change. Weird huh? So I go to the dealer and they said it is due for the 1200 mile service already. Even weirder. but I am not complaining, they gave me the greenlight to rev past 5500 rpm and the such and might I add: the (M) button has to be the coolest thing ever to turn my quiet touring coupe into a demon roaring demon at 8300rpm!!! Amazing!!!

Cheers to BMW

Oil changes are based on "Condition Based Driving"

IMHO i would have waited until after the 1200 mile mark even with the service done. I did my 1200 run in service at the 900 mile mark when I took my car in for an EDC failure. I still waited to rev it past 5500 after the 1200 mile mark. Like KKSigua said your driving habits used up the oil but the engine still may not have been properly broken in.

Mine came on at 900 miles but I waited until I hit 1200 miles or so. Like BCM said I would wait.

My driving habits? I never went WOT or passed 5500 and shifted slowly to break in the clutch. If I had driven aggressively I would've understood but the thing is I babied the thing very much. I guess it does make sense to take it easy until 1200 miles but since everyone at the dealer said it was okay, it's on them.

There's a warning msg and then there's an actual mileage when you're supposed to take it in. I think what you saw was the warning msg. If you go into service info the mileage for your oil change is when you should have taken it in. Usually it's around 1200-1300 miles depending on how you drive.

Yeah....I think it is an advisory message...mine is on already, and I have less mileage that he does. When I go to check it in the menu, it is basically telling me in XXX miles, it is due, from what I can figure out. The mileage in that window is decreasing, so I think it is a countdown/advisory message as well.

I got a call from my dealer telling me to come in for a oil change. My car only had 800 miles so I figured it was the 1200 mile service comming a little early. So they get me to schedule a service. I show up and the SA takes my key and plugs it into the reader and then tells me they are not allowed to change the oil till the 1200 mile service. They could do it as early as 1100 miles but no sooner. The SA blamed it on there appointment maker not knowing what service the M3 actually needs. There is 90 mins of my life wasted because they don't train there people properly.

Well if anything goes wrong with my car there are shitloads of people to blame. Service Advisor, the head mech that test drove my car afterwards etc that assured me my break in is COMPLETE and I can go past 5500rpm and WOT.

Confirmed that mine is an advisory message...ie: a "countdown".

When you first start the car, the mileage REMAINING until the schedueld oil change is displayed on the odo. In my car, it says 600 miles. Being as I have about 650 miles on the car, that is about right! I think it displays the mileage to next service in incriments of 100 miles...so it is not super accurate, but close enough I guess.

IF the mileage displayed has a NEGATIVE sign in front of it, you are overdue by that many miles for the change. FYI...Tim

Went in today to have the performance wheel installed and they want to do the 1200 service at 700miles. They all said it's OK to get on it, too...yep, dealerships doing what they do best...

I'll still run it mellow, though.

Here is what I wrote the service manager at BMW Seattle:

I have a service due message and it says XXX miles. Is this a reminder for the 1200 mile service? I currently have 873 miles on the car.

Here is what Elle from BMW Seattle wrote back:

The countdown is working down and a light will let you know when it's due. Needs to be within 100 miles to do it early. It is a quick service and I can do it on a Saturday. Let me know

Thanks Elle
