Awesome news that the sedan is making a return. It's the ultimate family car.

But not a fan of the name change.

Agree! It's fine with me that they are bringing out 2 series since 1 series is like a new born baby. But the problem is 3 series is BMW's icon. When people talked about BMW, they are most likely talking about 3 series/M3. BTW, 4 is a bad number in China, so dont even think that your new naming system can attract Asian! Wake up, Bavarian!

People..

BMW decision is based on a much larger scope (than what it being an M3, or called different), it based on BMW tradition of 6 & 8 series..? Even & odd #. M5 was different than the M6.

The first BMW 3 series M was a sedan (2-door), If that matters to anyone. Also, there still is an M3.. so what is the fuss?

Just because the coupe is an M4, means it stated as "one louder.." one higher in performance. As the coupe always outperform the sedans & are more purpose orientated. 4>3

Separate that, with the iconic M3 name.. and realize this is just separation of chassis.

The new M4 & M2 are going to be great cars.

exactly...let's keep M3 as it is and make an M2, I don't want to lose the M3 name just to keep us from saying M1!

That's not a coupe. That's an SUV. SAV in BMW speak.

Did you guys read that thread about the F80 M3? I don't like that there going to be changing the name to M4? M's are supposed to be unique. No doubt they will still be fantastic cars. The M3 has heritage and a history in the motorsport world. It would be like suddenly renaming future model corvettes to something else. Anyone else agree or am I just being weird?

Simple.
To complete the BMW lineup of odd vs. even names.....
X2 - SA Coupe
X3 - SAV
X4 - SA Coupe
X5 - SAV
X6 - SA Coupe
X7 - GSAV*

*Gigantic SAV.

So, how does Z line-up fit in when Z2 pops-up? and Z3...4-door roadster?

the other advantage is to piss of all the BMW marketing people when you screw up their dumb ass idea to start messing with the names

heck why call it a BMW at all?
why not change that as well?
just call it LOL!
so you spend 20 years getting one of the finest name badges of any manufacturer, the envy of many other car makers
then you proceed to run it to the ground
good job bmw

Very happy about the news for an M3 sedan.

Still feel M4 sounds weird. But you know what - what can they do? All the 3 series coupes will be 4 series coupes, and it would be weird for the M3 to represent both sedans and coupes. Not for us, the enthusiasts who know the history, etc. But are most BMW buyers gonna care? They'll just think higher number = more expensive.

I won't like it. But if it drives great, I'll get over it.

LoL m4? Why the hell would you do that to the m3 legacy and brand name? Your better off calling the the m3.5, just so there is still a 3 in there.
