2016 Exhaust vs ZCP Exhaust

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Seen a couple threads on the ZCP exhaust vs non-ZCP and the difference is noticeable. ZCP is louder but in the comparisons its always been compared to a 2015 exhaust/m3/m4...

There's comparisons of 2015 vs non-ZCP 2016 exhausts and 2016 is louder.

Question is, is it possible the ZCP exhaust note is the same as a 2016 or are there now 3 different exhaust notes..2015, 2016 & 2016 ZCP...

There was never a change in 16 besides fixing rattling valves and possibly adjusting some software.

The MY15 and MY16 exhausts sound identical beyond the less rattley valves. I've heard several in person as compared to my old MY15. No physical change to the exhausts themselves.

A lot of these comparisons were done with My16 exhausts that weren't broken-in as compared to My15 exhausts that were. This would reflect some minor differences between the two as well, but would be no different than a new MY15 compared to a broken-in MY15.

I thought there was a change in the exhaust of F80s for 2016. No?

Just fixing the valves. ZCP is louder/deeper than my non-ZCP F80 LCI. Side by side listening and it is noticeable.

Cool. Seems like the FY16 non-zcp vs FY15 non-zcp sounds a bit less raspy. So by extension the FY16 LCI should be deeper and sound closer to the ZCP minus the burbling. No?

According to ETK, 2015 and 2016 have the same part number for the rear silencer, but the CP has a different part number than the base car. The tips have their own part numbers, so it has nothing to do with the blacked out CP tips.

NO! Did you not read any of the posts thus far? There is no difference between MY15 and MY16 non-ZCP exhausts, sound-wise, with the exception of less rattley valves.

You can tell by his responses he's not reading the thread. The original question was answered twice in posts 2 and 3, then he asked the exact same question again. You answered it again, only for him to ask the same question a second time. Best to ignore people like that!

I have a '16 CP and the exhaust on it has about 1500 miles, it sounds much more different than when delivery day was. I can attest the CP definitely gets louder as it's broken in and it's a unique note as this is labeled the "M Sport Exhaust".

Sometimes people hear what they want to hear. This thread is evidence of that.

Guys - I don't question your wisdom or advocacy for the zcp...

Yes I have read the thread but I was asking because there have been many other threads and videos indicating there was a difference in sound (besides the valves fix) between the 2016 and 2015 non-ZCPs... Seems like your saying stuff as a matter of fact and to be honest I don't believe you

This is Nick Murray's video - the exhaust differences are noted first:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv8-Xv2nNSo

Is it just due to breaking in?

If there is a difference between the '15 and non-zcp '16, it would be insignificant and incomparable to the delta between the non-zcp and zcp due to the software tuned burbles/pops/crackles.

I think Nick's car is 2015 though. Does anyone have a video showing comparison between 2016 and 2016 zcp like Nick's video??

Yes - and everyone is saying there is no difference between a 2015 and a 2016 non-ZCP. Listen. There is.

Comparing a 2016 to a 2016 ZCP is a bit pointless - they are different, and I believe this has been done many times and it is not what the OP is asking. He's asking if there's a difference between the 15 and 16 non-ZCP, and from Nick's video there is a difference. But from all the rants in here, they are adamant there were no changes.

No possibility BMW would change the baffling inside a muffler without giving it a new part number?

There isn't a difference guys. What anybody is hearing is the difference between a broken-in exhaust and a non-broken-in exhaust. The 2016's might also be manipulating the exhaust valves differently than a 2015 on an older I-step firmware. The exhaust is physically the same and have the same part numbers.

I've personally heard a 2015 vs. 2016 non-ZCP. Both of which had more than a few thousand miles and they sounded identical.

That would be a shame, because the 2016 in Nick's video sounded better - so breaking in the exhaust makes it sound worse?

Well, I wouldn't put much stock in a video, first of all.

Secondly, it could come down to how, like I've stated, the ECU is controlling the valves and also possible the way the MY16 with a newer I-step is controlling the electronic wastegates too, particularly during a free rev. EWG's in the full open position will create lots of rasp as compared to a partially closed EWG.

There is a lot going on and a lot of variables. The MY15 and MY16 cars were very close in mileage and production dates. They sounded identical in person. I have no idea what I-step firmware they both had. If the MY15 is significantly older than the My16, there could be some real differences in the firmware.

I wouldn't put too much stock in two different videos, but the fact that Nick put that at the start of his video comparing the two meant that he and his fellow M3 owner heard the difference themselves, and you can hear it in the video.

So you're absolutely certain there's no way the internals of the exhaust could have changed without a different part number? Is that just not something they would or could ever do or is it possible?
