Previous M5 didn't have a dome either.

To me...it's less about functionality and more about what visually separates it from the base 3. You take a quick glance...see side vents...M. Quad pipes...M. I see powerdome...M. Flared fenders...M.
The side vents weren't funtional on the E9X either...but I'd wager they stay for the same reason. Not to mention...a lot of styling is the way it is on vehicles because...it looks good. The dome looks good imo.

Why do you guys think there will be a powerdome? There is no longer a need for it.

exactly, i dont think its BMW's style to put something like that on a car if its not needed but we'll see what happens. again i love the look of the powerdome but if its not needed then its not needed.

The side vents on the E9X aren't functional.
They also put that tiny OEM spoiler on the trunk of the E92...I can't believe that has any functionality.
I've even heard some argue the weight savings of the carbon fiber roof make a functionality arguement thin.
So...I think BMW does a few things that are for style vs functionality. I for one...like the dome...and hope it stays. If not...I'm sure one of the aftermarket companies will revive it.

i understand your point. im saying something like a powerdome i cant see them putting there for looks, side vents i can see. the spoiler is an option and im sure is mostly for looks. i just cant see them putting something as big as a powerdome on just for the looks but if they do i will love it because its sexy.

Believe it or not, the M3 spoiler makes a pretty good difference in downforce. Someone posted pictures of wind tunnel tests with and without the spoiler, and the difference given the relatively small size of the lip was impressive.

As for the CF roof, its function isn't specifically to reduce the car's overall weight (which it does), but it's to lower its center of gravity.

My point exactly the last E60 545i (V8) or M5 (V10) did not share an engine and neither had a power dome. The 5er M's do not have a traditional power dome but M3's do. It is the trade mark for M3's without that it would suck.

Also, the hood scoops on the M3 one side is functional while the other is not. But with upcoming M3 and to reduce turbo heat soak issues they should make more stylish better integrated two functional hood scoops or even one large one incorporated into the power dome. I am tired of the M division holding back in aggressiveness specially when it comes to M3's.

Now with M5's you can understand that they do not want to go more in your face aggressive as it is up market large size sedan. But common M3 with stretching and all is in smaller mid-size segment and here you do not have to hold back.

Give it some overly aggressive stance like MB black series cars. Give it a aggressive power dome, some functional hood scoops, carbon fiber roof, hood, and trunk etc. Give it some seriously aggressive sound track and do not go overly conservative al la M5.

It is not always about that with BMW M cars. Take the example of 545i (V8) vs M5 (V10) or 645ci (V8) vs M6 (V10). The V10 requires more room then the V8's and runs hotter yet no functional scoops or power dome. I believe that is because they like to go a bit conservative with M5's and M6's. Where as M3 are more down market and attracts younger buyers and thus more aggressive profile.
