Video: s55 Powered BMW F80 M3 Flying and Singing on the Nurburgring

Ahead of its debut (in concept form) sometime later this year, the production F80 M3 prototype forges ahead with testing this week at the Nurburgring. We've got it on video giving us probably the best listen so far at the F80 M3's multi-turbo inline 6.

If you recall, we recently reported on information gleaned from the M4 prototype's registered VIN information (see here).

According to the VIN info, the M3 will be powered by a 310kW (415 hp) 3.0L inline 6 engine (s55) [photos]. Consistent with the information we've been posting, this would have the next M3 and M4 featuring similar horsepower figures to the current M3 (414 hp) from the 3.0L inline 6 multi-turbo s55 engine. But, we've also been previously told by a trusty source familiar with F80/F82 development that the cars will boast approximately 100 lb-ft more torque (in range of 395 lb-ft) (source).

The rest of the info we know:

Lighter than current M3
- targeting E46 M3 weight (source)
More powerful than current M3
- approximately same HP (confirmation?), but around 100 lb-ft more torque (in range of 395 lb-ft) (source)
Faster than current M3
More efficient than current M3
Powered by an inline 6 cylinder multi turbo engine (source, source)
Offered with DCT and manual transmission
Offered with optional M Carbon Ceramic Brakes (photos)
Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
Tires (from prototype) - Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)
Front styling to feature elements from the M6 and 1M coupe, with Air Curtain technology (our render)
Hood to feature power/vent bump
F82 M4 coupe to feature double-bubble sculpted carbon fiber roof (like M6 Coupe)
M3 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
M3 European Delivery begins June 2014, at earliest
M4 Introduced no earlier than late 2014

As much as I think the new M3/M4 will be a beast. The S65 is just a monster. No comparison in sound for sure.

The I6 is the real deal in a M3/4 imo.
The E36/46 had great sound!
more sporty and agressive sound than the more lazy S engine in the E9*.

I remember the comments when the M3 E92 was still in it's testing stage. Everybody was crying that the sound of the E46 was better. Now suddenly the S65 is the sh*t. I bet you by the time this thing is replaced the same people who are crying about the S65 today will be crying about this S55 then. ...
