I think if you have a non-ZCP car with all the chrome, basic wheels, etc, then yes it does start to look a bit dated or at the very least, un-exciting.

The ZCP cars will look good for a long time....at least to me.

And +1 on the new M5...boring.

dated yes, but bad no.

All of the M3s look great to me, and so will this one. I feel the same way about the M5s, and some of the M6s.

I dont care about dated, as much as "do they look good". BTW on the porsche note I personally think they look boring because they never change. You have to go way back before you start to see anything interesting/different.

The F8X should age nicely in my opinion. I never quite liked the E9X M3s, so looking at it today makes it seem dated to me. However, I will say its not aged nearly as bad as other cars out there like a G37, which came out around the same time. The front of the F8X is much better balanced than the previous generations, but styling is reasonable and not outrageous. It's aggressive in the right amount and you can tell it's a M car. Lexus RCF in comparison has a very bold styling that will help it age well, but their entertainment system will be their downfall.

As far as the interior goes, when cars with more modern interior (Audi, MB, etc..) start making all their models with the fancy full screen digital speedo / tach / integrated navi, BMW will have some catching up to do. But the F8X was meant to be more of a drivers car, so one could argue it gives more than what is necessary and desired.

Only time will tell.

Some of the things I happy the F8X will be dated on i.e. manual transmission, analog instrument cluster, non electric and RWD if that happens to die in the next gen.

The body of the F80/82 is the same aesthetically ZCP or not. It's not like the difference between the standard M4 and the GTS. Wheels can do a lot to the looks of a vehicle, but it's a matter of personal preference on styling, not something that dates a car by itself. And you can always add new shoes to a car to freshen up the look if you so choose. Just take a look over at the M3/4 gallery. So many different wheel options and everyone has their own personal taste on wheels.

The black badging (rear M3/4 logo and black side markers) can be swapped out as to preference for about $180-200 at the most over the standard chrome, black exhaust tips aren't everyone's thing as well, also something that can be easily changed.

So pretty much it's no different cosmetically other than the wheels and minor black trim highlights which are again...a matter of personal preference. I can't say I've ever looked at a standard vs a competition package car and said to myself..."boy that standard //M sure looks dated/un-exciting" It's so minor.

Headlights/taillights or typically LCI models are the larger difference as to a car looking dated IMHO.

Porches are they only cars that never look dated as they don't change the design much. I watched a Lucacris video "Rollout" from 2001 and his Mercedes looks super dated but the Porches in the video could pass for new.

It will look a bit dated for 10-15 years, then become iconic! I think the interior will hold up a lot better than e90s. Those cars still look great but the interior is shockingly boring and bland.

I agree. Until I saw pics of the F8x M3/4 I never considered the E9x M3 to look dated at all. Now when I look at the E9x it looks like an old design to my eyes. I must say that Porsche are the masters of timeless design - every 911 produced in the 20 years still looks great. The key is that their evolution has been extremely slow aesthetically.
Unless you are a Porsche guy.

The issue with that is to some people they started out ugly, and slowly evolved to still be ugly to this day. They should have changed them.

Porsches used to look much better. My favorite is the 1980 Turbo and it is 37 years old and doesn't look dated today IMHO.

It looks extremely dated to me - but dated doesn't have to mean "bad" even though I'm not a fan.

the slantnose looks totally '80s. lol But it is an awesome design, no less.

I think the modern design and proportions of the F80 will hold up well. The E90 looks totally dated to me in comparison. The E92 has faired better, but only its profile and rear.

Of course all this depends on how the next gen will look!

E92 to me, always looked better than e90.

So what is the difference between dated and old. I consider cars to live in the time they were designed. Why do some people say the 8 series could be sold as is in 90's trim and look new? To me the 8 series looks like it is from the past, It all opinion. Ask me if an 560SEC AMG looks dated... well I guess but it is still an awesome looking car and don't consider it dated just a car from the 90's

It will age like fine wine. IMHO the F80 will be more desirable than the E9X 4 door which already looks dated. The E9X M3 coupe has held up nicely imho.

I personally think the M4 is easily the best looking bmw coupe design of all time and its brother M3 taking the sedan crown. The m4 rear end really is something else. Mr Nissl, props to you.

Lighting tech has the biggest impact on exterior freshness. The 2018 headlights make a huge aesthetic statement being darker like the optional Porsche 911 blacked out led option. The DRL already shares its design language with der neue m5. Coupled with finally getting rid of incandescent rear lights, the lci II m4 is in fantastic shape for a long while. Big fan.

All cars date, but a dated car isn't a bad looking car.

I think the F80 M3 will go down as one of the best looking, if not the best looking 4 door M car, the flares man, the flares!

It's very four square, planted and looks strong even without mods not sure I can say that about the F82.

I have to say that a flat nosed turbo is a very dated car and screams the late 1980's and is very much of its time to me.

But that's not to say it's a bad looking car but dated? Yes very much so.
