Very interesting. I would have liked them to show us more of the app on the MMI.

i can't decide if it's cool of it just duplicates what the phone already does (and doesn't care about if you're moving or not)

i've been thinking of buying a camera, but I'm heavily leaning towards the sony as100 due to it's better low light performance and stabilization (amongst a few other things)

This could sway me, but first I'm an android guy (although I could use an ipad) and second ... seems like it's just duplicating the phone apps.

Wait, so you can view the live feed from the camera on the idrive display? That changes everything! I thought it was just to start and stop the recordings.

This solution doesn't make sense to me. If BMW wants to do things properly, they should figure out how to use the already factory installed parking cameras on the car. Maybe they should change them to fit the requirements of the recording aspect ratio or something.

BMWs already have cameras, hard drive, metering devices and other sensors, so a solution like this should be offered as an integrated option.

That could be a package similar to what GM offers on the Corvette:

Sounds like you don't own a GoPro and/or don't use it to it's full potential.

The whole point of a GoPro is so you can mount it wherever YOU want, not where BMW wants. It's about getting the shots YOU want, including taking that camera off your M3/4 and transferring it to a different car, bike, boat or whatever it may be on the same day.

Oh and good luck paying for the installed parking cameras to shoot at 4k or 240fps while also recording sound.

This is the proper and most cost effective solution.

Compare that quality to GoPro.

Oh and you're also stuck with that view. No option of mounting it lower, higher, side view, cockpit view, etc.

I totally agree, that's terrible. The overlay is ugly, laggy and almost useless with such a low update rate. I was trying to meet the previous poster that it has been done in an integrated way before by a manufacturer. I however have issues with that kind of implementation. In addition to the point that you raised about the lack of versatility you are also tied to the car's system and you rely on the manufacturer to update it. And we know they are generally not that great at moving forward especially old MY (I think MY 2011 E9x owners will agree on that one!). A decoupled approached with a tech company controlling the software seems to make more sense and will have a bit more interest in keeping things fresh and up to date.

I'm 100% with you.

The support you'll get from GoPro will be unmatched to that of a car manufacturer. One manufacturer cares to sell a car while another cares to sell a camera. Who would you rather take a camera from?
Hence why BMW went with the best in the business instead of coming up with their own.

the only thing is that they got rid of the m laptimer for this right? to have both, just use the record button manually or use your wifi button...you really dont need to see the view preshot (which btw you can see through the gopro app on your phone). view the preshot, set the camera, then no other need to view it.

if you want to view your videos, take a laptop, pop in the microsd card and view while the other sessions are running.

Well, yes. I agree that in pretty much everything 3rd party solutions are more specialized and work better… BMW doesn't normally come up with interesting software updates in the cars, and they always upgrade hardware as well. I guess Tesla has a better vision with technology...

Anyone notice that around 1:21 they incorrectly label the the cars and their years?
